Luu named MVP; two named Most Improved

April 28, 2007 - Senior Helen Luu was named Most Valuable Player at the annual awards banquet. Luu (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) finished 2007 with 11 points, 51 groundballs, and 19 caused turnovers.  Kelly Oakes and Ashley Herczeg were both named Most Improved. Oakes (Fr., Wilmington, DE/Delcastle), who had 4 goals and 17 groundballs, was also named MVP of the basketball team and Rookie of the Year, while Herczeg (Sr., Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) was also named MVP of the field hockey team. Senior defender Jennifer Woytach (Duryea, PA/Pittston Area), who had 43 groundballs, received the Upperclassmen Athletic Service Award and attack Kirsten Gustafson (Sr., New Milford, CT/New Milford) was named LVAIAW Outstanding Athlete of the Year. Gustafson led the Falcons' scoring with 46 goals.

April 21, 2007 - Kirsten Gustafson put Cedar Crest on the board in the opening minute of Saturday's PAC game. Misericordia answered back ten minutes later and built a 4-1 lead until Gustafson cut the Cougars' lead to 4-2. The Cougars scored three more times and Jesenia Holguin gave the Falcons another goal to bring the halftime score to 7-3, though Cedar Crest outshot the Cougars 21-13 in the first half. Misericordia opened up scoring in the second half with four goals until Brittanney Smith, assisted by Holguin, made it an 11-4 game. Misericordia scored again, but Brianna Adam, Bailey Bedell, assisted by Helen Luu, and Gustafon's 2 goals gave brought the Falcons within 4. Misericordia would add 2 more goals to end scoring at 14-8. Luu led Cedar Crest with 5 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers. Keeper Devin Ursini had 10 saves. Seniors Gustafson, Smith, Luu, Emily Dittmar, Nicole Cribari, Ashley Herczeg, and Jennifer Woytach were honored before Saturday's game.

April 19, 2007 - Cedar Crest held Moravian to a scoreless opening 10 minutes on Thursday, but the Greyhounds took control of the game with an 11-1 lead at the half, en route to a 19-4 non-conference win. Kirsten Gustafson had 3 goals for the Falcons, while Helen Luu added 1 goal and had a game-high 5 ground balls.

April 18, 2007 - Cedar Crest had an early 3-0 lead from two Kirsten Gustafson goals and one from Amanda Dombroski in Wednesday's game in Immaculata, PA. Brianna Adam gave the Falcons another goal, but the Mighty Macs took the 5-4 lead at halftime. Gustafson opened scoring in the second half to tie the game at 5-5, but 2 Immaculata goals put the Mighty Macs ahead 7-5. Kelly Oakes brought the Falcons within 1, but Immaculata scored again to take the 2 goal lead. Gustafson and Helen Luu scored to tie the game again at 8-8, but Immaculata scored once more and held on for the 9-8 PAC win.

April 16, 2007 - Due to conditions at Immaculata, today's away game has been postponed to this Wednesday, 4/18.

April 14, 2007 - Alvernia College scored 6  goals to give the Knights an early lead, but Kirsten Gustafson (2), Kelly Oakes (1), and Helen Luu (1) answered back to bring the score within 2. Alvernia would net 8 more goals to end the half at 14-4, and scores from three more Falcons would keep second half's score to 7-6 Alvernia, but the Falcons were unable overcome first half's 10 goal lead. Gustafson led Cedar Crest with 3 goals, while Oakes and Brittanney Smith had 2, Danielle Skinner, Jesenia Holguin, and Luu each had 1 goal, and Amanda Dombroski had an assist. Skinner, Emily Dittmar, and Jennifer Woytach each had 4 ground balls.

April 11, 2007 - Cedar Crest answered Arcadia University's first 4 goals Wednesday afternoon, but the Knights jumped to a 10-4 lead at the half en route to their 20-9 PAC win. Kirsten Gustafson scored 5 goals for the Falcons, while Helen Luu (2), Brie Adam (1), and Brittanney Smith (1) also scored. Luu and Danielle Skinner each picked up 4 ground balls and Devin Ursini collected 7 saves, while Mackenzie Lee had 5 in goal.

April 4, 2007 - Cedar Crest held defending PAC Champions Eastern to a 6-4 score in the second half of Wednesday's PAC game, but the Eagles' 9-0 halftime lead powered them to their fifth conference win of the season. Kirsten Gustafson had 2 goals, while Bailey Bedell and Brittanney Smith each had 1. Helen Luu and Jennifer Woytach each picked up 3 ground balls, while Devin Ursini and Mackenzie combined for 13 saves in goal for the Falcons. 

April 3, 2007 - Kristen Gustafson, Helen Luu, and Kelly Oakes each scored once for the Falcons in their 14-3 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy on Tuesday. Luu also picked up 5 ground balls, while Devin Ursini and Mackenzie Lee had 8 and 2 saves in goal, respectively.

March 31, 2007 - Kristen Gustafson scored 3 goals, while Brianna Adam added 1 goal and Thersia Ault assisted 1 in Cedar Crest's 18-4 loss to Cabrini on Saturday. Jennifer Woytach had 4 ground balls and Emily Dittmar caused 2 turnovers, while goalkeeper Devin Ursini stopped 21 shots.

March 30, 2007 - Junior attacker Brianna Adam was recently selected to attend the 2007 NCAA National Leadership Conference. Adam (Perkiomenville, PA/ Upper Perkiomen) will attend the conference Sunday, May 27 to Thursday, May 31 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.

March 27, 2007 - Kristen Gustafson had 4 goals, with Brittanney Smith and Brianna Adam each adding one as the Falcons fell to non-conference opponent Chestnut Hill, 24-6 on Tuesday. Helen Luu had 5 ground balls.

March 24, 2007 - Cedar Crest College fell 16-0 against defending Seven Sisters Tournament champion Swarthmore on Saturday at Wellesley College. Brittanney Smith picked up 3 ground balls in the loss to the Garnet during the sixteenth and final annual Seven Sisters Tournament. In their next game, the Falcons traveled to nearby Babson College to face Mount Holyoke. Kristen Gustafson led with Cedar Crest with 5 goals in the 19-8 loss, while she scored 6 times in the Falcons' 18-7 loss to Bryn Mawr College on Sunday. Brianna Adam scored once, while Smith picked up four ground balls. Devin Ursini and Mackenzie Lee each posted 3 saves in goal against the Owls.

March 22, 2007 - The game at Rosemont scheduled for today has been postponed. A make up date has yet to be determined. 

March 21 2007 - The game at Rosemont scheduled for today (Wednesday) has been moved to tomorrow at the same start time.

March 19, 2007 - The home game against Wilkes scheduled for today at 4:00 has been postponed. A make up date has yet to be determined. 

March 17, 2007 - Due to inclement weather, the game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Immaculata University has been postponed until Monday, April 16th. The game against Moravian scheduled for that day will be moved.

March 14, 2007 - In their home opener against PAC rival Neumann College, Cedar Crest seemed determined to stay right with the Knights every step of the way. Matching the visitors goal for goal early on were Danielle Skinner, Helen Luu and Kirsten Gustafson, who scored twice. The score remained tied at 4-4 until about 5:00 to the half, when a quick barrage of goals by the Knights broke the game open. Luu also had 4 caused turnovers, Devin Ursini had 17 saves in 60 minutes in goal, and Jen Woytach had 6 ground balls. The Falcons had 2 goals in the second half from Bailey Bedell.

March 12, 2007 - Cedar Crest dropped an 18-5 decision to Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. Kirsten Gustafson led the Falcons with 2 goals, while Brittanney Smith, Helen Luu, and Brianna Adam each had 1. Luu also picked up 5 ground balls, while Devin Ursini had 9 saves in goal

March 10, 2007 - The Falcons opened the 2007 season with a 17-5 loss at Wesley College Saturday. Seniors Kirsten Gustafson and Brittanney Smith each had 2 goals, while junior Brie Adam had 1. Senior Helen Luu led the Falcons with 5 ground balls while Devin Ursini had 14 saves in goal in her collegiate debut.

Kyle Kauffman named head coach

Kyle Kauffman will take over as Head Coach of the Falcons' lacrosse team in 2007. Kauffman, who served as Assistant Coach last season, was a was a defensive specialist and a three-year starter at Ursinus College. She earned All-Centennial Conference First Team honors in her junior and senior seasons and prior to her senior season, Inside Lacrosse magazine named her to their pre-season All-American Third Team. As a senior, she anchored a defense that ranked third in the conference in goals-against average and led the Bears in caused turnovers with 23. She was chosen by the IWLCA as a First Team selection and made the ECAC South All-Star Team. A native of Boyertown, PA, Kauffman graduated with a degree in Communication and a minor in Elementary Education. She is an Admissions Counselor at Cedar Crest and served as Assistant Lacrosse Coach last season.

“Kyle brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and enthusiasm to our program,” Kristin Maile, Director of Athletics said.  “I am confident she will build a winning tradition at Cedar Crest College.”

Joining Kauffman is Cedar Crest alumna Rachel Lightfoot. Lightfoot played lacrosse for four years and was team captain her junior and senior years, voted MVP her sophomore and senior years, and earned All-PAC honors. She finished her career with 47 goals and 10 assists, for 57 points and currently holds the record for career ground balls with 143. She also played soccer for four years, serving as captain for three.  Lightfoot was the Cedar Crest College Rookie of the Year in 2002. Lightfoot received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology in 2005. She has also been the Assistant Soccer Coach at Cedar Crest for two years.

2006 Season Review

Cedar Crest's lacrosse team finished 1-16, 1-9 PAC in 2006 under first year Head Coach Amy Martin. Junior Kirsten Gustafson led the team with 38 goals, while junior Helen Luu had 29 draw controls and 40 ground balls, and junior Brittanney Smith had 17 caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Keri McDeviit had 279 saves.

McDevitt was named team MVP, while sophomore midfielder Danielle Skinner was the team's Most Improved. McDevitt also received a PAC Honorable Mention, while junior Nicole Cribari was named to the PAC Sportsmanship team. McDeviit, juniors Emily Dittmar, Kirsten Gustafson, Helen Luu, and Jennifer Woytach, sophomores Brianna Adam, Skinner,  and Andrea Zajac, and freshmen Gwen Mayhew and Carrie Olson were named to the PAC's All-Academic team.
