Anthropology – Minor
For information, contact Dr. Cate Cameron.
Anthropology is the study of humans as both biological and cultured animals and
is broadly inclusive of prehistoric, historic, and the contemporary societies
in many global settings. At Cedar Crest, emphasis is given to cultural
anthropology, the sub-field that looks at a variety of social arrangements and
institutions in contemporary societies of the world. Classes include a culture
area course (Caribbean), a number of topical courses in cultural anthropology,
and courses in biological anthropology and archeology.
There are exciting opportunities for students outside of the classroom – field trips, research internships with faculty, and a field school course
conducted in the Caribbean. Because fieldwork has such as central place in
anthropology, students may pursue primary research projects in courses and are
encouraged to do supervised internships at non-profit agencies and
organizations in the community.
Requirements for the minor are Anthropology 100 and any five additional courses
(listed below) for a total of 18 credits. An option open to students interested in a major in anthropology is to
self-design a course of study drawing on cognate courses at Cedar Crest and
other nearby colleges with the help of the program coordinator.
