Cedar Crest College announced today that Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney, President of Cedar Crest College, died on July 10 after a long struggle with cancer. She passed away in the President’s Residence at the College with her family at her bedside.
Dr. Blaney had requested a leave from the Board of Trustees on Thursday, July 6. According to the College’s by-laws, Carol A. Pulham, Ph.D, ’76, the College’s Provost, assumed day-to-day responsibilities of the College President through December 31, 2006. The Trustees will meet later this month to discuss a search for a new president.
President Blaney’s husband, Dr. Joseph Blaney, said, “I cannot, at this time, adequately express the devastation I feel with the loss of Dorothy. She was at the center of the joy and happiness I have experienced for nearly thirty years. I knew and loved the complete Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney. Cedar Crest College can never fully appreciate, as I do, what a wonderful person they had as President for eighteen years.”
“You do not have enough room to print all of Dorothy’s achievements and honors and awards,” said Charles T. Noonan, Chairman of the Cedar Crest College Board of Trustees. “Educators educate. Leaders lead. Dorothy was an educating leader. She led Cedar Crest to eminence. She educated us all here at the College to strive for perfection, always her goal. We Trustees admire Dorothy; we respect her; we honor her; but most importantly, we love her, without end.”
"My life has been truly beautiful, full of passion, energy, achievement and love and also lots of fun,” wrote Dr. Blaney in a brief letter to her family just before she died. “I know for many my death will be sad but for me it will be a chance to become part of all that is good and whole and beautiful. I will haunt Joseph always and Hope too. "The Magic Flute" is my favorite piece of music and captures the magic, the sublime music that makes life comedy rather than tragedy. That summarizes the best for me."
For more than 30 years, Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney was a leader in higher education. Prior to assuming the presidency of Cedar Crest College in 1988, Dr. Blaney served as Executive Vice President of Pace University in New York and before that as Deputy Commissioner for Higher Education in the New York State education system.
When Dr. Blaney first arrived on campus at that time, the College’s financial condition was grave and the enrollment barely reached 700 students. This summer, the total enrollment of the College has reached nearly 1,900. In addition, the number of honor students has increased 35 percent and science students have doubled, the endowment has increased fourfold, the total annual giving has risen from $1.2 million to $5.7 million, and alumnae participation in giving has increased from 26 percent to 50 percent.
Under her stewardship, the College has acquired major art works on permanent loan, including sculptures of Gaston Lachaise (one of the twentieth century’s modern masters), eight works of Bruno Lucchesi (one of the leading figurative sculptors of the second half of the century) and seven works of Toshiko Takaezu (international ceramicist). The College has added three new buildings, including the Miller Family Building, with state-of-the-art science and nursing facilities and the Lachaise art gallery, the Rodale Aquatic Center, with a competition and a fitness pool, and, in 2004, the Oberkotter Center for Health and Wellness. With her vision, the DaVinci Discovery Center for Science and Technology was also relocated to the Cedar Crest campus.
On May 16, in honor of all that Dr. Blaney has done for Cedar Crest College, the Trustees voted to change the name of the Administration Building, and rededicate it as Blaney Hall.
Dr. Blaney served as chair of the Board of the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by Billie Jean King, as a Trustee of the Academy of American Poets, and on the boards of the Discovery Center of Science and Technology and the Council of Independent Colleges. In 2005, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education honored Dr. Blaney with its Chief Executive Leadership Award.
She was the author of three books, “Careers for Humanists,” with Ernest R. May of Harvard University, as well as “Infinite Possibilities” and “Gifts of Today” with David Finn (the last of which will be published at the end of July).
Dr. Blaney graduated from the Shipley School, received her B.A. from Cornell University, held a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley, and received her Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Albany.
Dr. Blaney was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on February 24, 1941. Her parents, both deceased, were Diran and Kathleen Gulbenkian. She was a grand-niece of Calouste Gulbenkian, founder of the Gulbenkian Museum and Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Blaney is survived by her husband Joseph of Allentown and Skytop, PA, her daughter Hope M. Harrison of Alexandria, VA, and her sister, Mary Leferovich of Eastchester, NY.
The funeral will be private. There will be a memorial service at the College at 11:00 a.m. on July 20. The public is cordially invited. The family requests that flowers not be sent. A student scholarship in Dr. Blaney’s name is being established at the College. Contributions to the scholarship fund can be made to: Cedar Crest College, Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney Scholarship Fund, 100 College Dr., Allentown, PA 18104.
A very big loss for CCC. My prayers go to her family and to the college. May
the college take time to heal and begin the search for a new president with
much care.

It was an honor and extraordinary pleasure working with Dr. Blaney. When I
first started at the College I worked in the Bookstore, then moved on to delivering
the President her mail as a campus courier, and then moved to the Security
Department. No mater what job that I preformed for the College she always treated
you the same. She would always ask how you were doing and how your family was.
She was an amazing person. I feel such a great honor and pleasure knowing that
I was able to know her for over 15 years but at the same time feel a great
emptiness knowing that I will not see her again. Dr. Blaney it was a great
honor and pleasure working with you, I know you are at peace now and I think
that will help me get through my sorrow and pain. God bless you and your family
in this time of sorrow and I promise to keep up the tradition that you started
here at this great college. Thank you for all you did for us.

I have many wonderful memories of President Blaney over the course of my 4
years living on campus. I loved attending the Strawberry Festival at her home,
seeing her walk around the campus, and the friendly hellos that she would give
to everyone. Most of all, I will always treasure the hugs that she gave me
while I was a student at Cedar Crest because I knew they were sincere and true.
President Blaney had a heart of gold and put the needs of the college above
all else to aide in advancing the education of women. I truly felt a connection
with her and knew that she cared about me...just as she cared about every single
student that walked onto the campus of Cedar Crest. I miss her so much but
I know that her spirit will always be felt around the college that she loved
so much. God bless President Blaney.

I first met Dorothy when interviewing for the position of Vice President of
Institutional Advancement at Cedar Crest. We had a nice visit and at one point
she mentioned that Joseph was Chair of the Mountain Laurel Performing Arts
Center. As I was a finalist for a position at the Center, as well, I felt obliged
to let Dorothy know this. The visit continued and I quickly became enchanted
by this dynamic leader. When the interview was over we said our goodbyes and
I walked out of Dorothy's office. It was at this point that Dorothy stuck her
head out and told me she would let Joseph know that I was no longer interested
in his position. The rest is history.

Unfortunately for me, I had only been introduced to Dr. Blaney at commencement
this May. It was unfortunate for me because, it only took listening to her
speech and observing her that this woman was very special and wonderful. The
way she described the college and the experiences that we as students must
have had was so insightful. She really understood how to engulf life and shared
this with us all.

Dr. Blaney's passions for Cedar Crest College and health and wellness have
inspired me to change my life. She lived her life with what seemed like a never-ending
supply of energy. And she never passed up the opportunity to teach others,
including me, the value of balancing a healthy mind, body and spirit. Those
lessons will be with me forever, as will Dr. Blaney's legacy at Cedar Crest
College. My heart goes out to her family.

As I uphold you in my prayers for strength in each passing day, I also reflect
on the blessing that President Blaney has been to all of us at Cedar Crest.
Personally, I will always remember President Blaney as a woman of strength
and courage. I joined CCC September 2004 at a time when President Blaney began
her fight with cancer. As I watched her embrace her illness she continued to
teach me the importance of excellence, commitment, and that there is joy in
the smallest details. In life as in death, there is sorrow, but knowing that
your wife, your mother, your sister, our friend, our President is at peace
with no more pain is the blessing and gift of God's saving grace. May God bless
you and comfort you today and always! With warm regards, Sheryl Riddlestorffer

My first and only experience with Dr. Blaney was a couple of years ago when
I graduated from Cedar Crest with my Bachelor Degree. We were standing in line
waiting to enter and this women walked up to me and started a conversation.
She took about 10 minutes of her time to ask me about myself and speak a little
about the excitement of the day, but never introduced herself. I was an evening
college student, so my experiences on campus were limited going to class and
going home; I really did not have a chance to really engross myself in the
Cedar Crest experience, which is why I had no clue who it was who came over
to speak with me. It was very welcomed, as I was kinda lingering around by
myself. It was not until the ceremony started, that I discovered who it was
who came to my side and kept me company until the graduation procession had
begun. As I said I have had only one encounter with Dr. Blaney, but from what
I have read from other students, my experience was not an isolated occurrence,
but one of many moments that encompass the great warmth and character of this
remarkable women. To her husband, daughter, family and friends, thank you so
much for sharing her with us all these years. With deepest sympathy and prayers,

Though our beloved President has physically vacated the campus, Dorothy Blaney
will never really be gone, for she is found in every building on campus, in
every tree and flower and sculpture, in the ceremonies and traditions that
govern Cedar Crest, and in the building that stands as a living remembrance
of her, Blaney Hall. Because of Dr. Blaney, Cedar Crest is the school that
I have come to love and adore. Without her dedication, I would not be where
I am today, and neither would Cedar Crest. Dr. Blaney, we will miss your presence
on campus, your speaking abilities, your inspirational thoughts and words,
and most of all, your dedication to life. There is something special about
Cedar Crest, something more than words can express, and you added greatly to
that feeling as President. You were cherished, and you will be remembered.

Just prior to President Blaney's arrival in 1989 Cedar Crest College was crumbling
both figuratively and literally. One memory that will always be with me is
playing basketball with guys like Gerry Cozzolino, John Flautz, Charlie Chapman,
Maynard Cressman, Don Stinner, Pat Sobrinski, and Chris Duelfer. What made
things even more interesting was that we had to play around buckets on the
court because the gym roof was far from being waterproof. Dr. Blaney wanted
Cedar Crest to be an exceptional institution and a home for many students,
faculty and staff, and she knew the importance of having a beautiful and functional
campus. I have heard many students, prospective students and parents comment
on how beautiful the campus is; the current state of the Cedar Crest campus
is only one of Dr. Blaney's many fulfilled dreams. She will always be appreciated
for this.

The word 'sadness' is an understatement regarding the loss of President Blaney.
I have never been able to come up with an answer to the question that everyone
is asking now. Why do such terrible things happen to such wonderful people?
I cannot say; but I can say that she had the kindest words for me during my
sorrow. Although I cannot put it as eloquently as she could have, I think very
fondly of President Blaney and her cherished family, now more than ever.

In my service to the community of Higher Education I have only had the opportunity
to meet Dr. Blaney for a brief and fleeting moment, however I have had the
privilege to know her through the students & staff of CCC. Dr. Blaney's
spirit is a thread which has been sewn into the soul of each member of the
Cedar Crest Community. She made the world a better place for all by reminding
us all to make the world a better place for others.

When you start out as a young professional in the work world, you often wonder
if you have anything important to say or to contribute. You worry that your
ideas don't have the wisdom behind them to make them worthwhile to your more
experienced colleagues. At least, that's how I felt. But Dr. Blaney was the
type of leader who encouraged everyone to contribute their thoughts and ideas,
and made you feel comfortable doing so. Thank you, Dr. Blaney, for inspiring
me, and so many other women, to have confidence, to believe that we matter
and to know that we all have something meaningful to contribute. Though you
are no longer physically on campus to lead us on, your legacy and vision compel
us to continue to move Cedar Crest forward.

I never met Dr Blaney and for this I feel sad. Although I feel that in some
strange way she has been one of my mentors. The mere presence of a person is
not important, but rather how they have affected your life is what matters.
After 30 years I finally decided to go back to school. It was a huge decision & took
much thought and preparation. What cemented it for me, was the remarkable reputation
of Cedar Crest College. Since I began I have never been happier and I am now
on my way to turning around the one regret of my life, becoming an RN. Since
it was Dr Blaney who helped to make this college one of the premier colleges
in the state, I have to say, "Dr Blaney, thank you". Thank you from the bottom
of my heart and I promise to work hard to continue the impressive success rate
of your past and future graduates. May you rest in Peace.

I'm currently a nursing student at Cedar Crest College. Although I did not
know President Blaney on a personal level - her impact on the college has been
profound. I attended Cedar Crest College in the late 90's and I'm back again
for a second degree. What I am getting at is that within that short time, so
many improvements have been made to the college. President Blaney was truly
a gifted woman. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult
time. May you find peace and solace in knowing that you had one of the "great
ones" as a wife / mother. My prayers are with you. Sincerely, Andrea

While I've only been at Cedar Crest for 2 years, I've encountered the spirit,
love of beauty and strength that emanated from Dr. Blaney on many occasions.
Most recently, I crossed paths with the Blaneys late one evening this June
as they strolled around campus. I was tired and remember thinking to myself, "where
does this woman get her boundless energy?" At the same time, there was a lightness
to her being that spoke of the battle raging on in her body. It struck me in
the moment that this late night stroll was a profound and triumphant celebration
of love, passion and personal fulfillment. This is how I will always remember
Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney. Lightly, passionately, reverently, caressing the
grounds of Cedar Crest College

My most sincere condolences to the family and the rest of the CCC community
at this tragic and untimely loss. I have so many fond memories of Dr. Blaney,
but two of them really stick out in my mind. One took place my sophomore year
at CCC, about a month after I had begun treatments for my own cancer. I was
on campus to visit and Dr. Blaney not only heard about it, but also tracked
me down. I went to visit with her and as we walked the halls of the then Admin
Building, she put her arm around me and asked how my treatments were going,
how I was feeling, how I was coping, etc. She also made a random remark that
isn't quite appropriate to put in here, but it still remains one of the most
surprising and funniest things I have ever heard. I'm smiling now just thinking
of it. The other memory that will always live in my mind is the day we were
shooting water balloons in the quad with a water balloon slingshot one cold
fall evenin g during my junior year. Dr. Blaney was walking by, saw us, turned
and headed our way - making us all think we were in trouble. Instead, she came
over and inquired as to what exactly we were doing. We explained it, and to
our surprise, she asked if she could try! I have such wonderful photos of her
smiling ear to ear pulling the launcher back so far that she was laying on
the muddy ground, while wearing a full length fur coat!!! We only stopped when
we ran out of balloons and she had to get to her meeting that she was now late
for. Dr. Blaney was the heart and soul of CCC. Her presence will always be
felt on campus and in the hearts of CCC graduates everywhere. Enjoy your wings,
Dr. Blaney.

I am just devastated by the loss of Dr. Blaney, but know that what I feel
cannot compare to what Joseph, Hope, Mary, and the CCC family who worked with
her on a daily basis are feeling. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Our
class was the first to graduate under Dr. Blaney. A number of us have been
communicating over the last few days, reminiscing about the excitement and
joy we felt when her selection as president was announced. I'd like to share
part of a message I sent to Dr. Pulham Monday night upon hearing the sad news:
I remember so clearly the struggles our college went through during my years
on campus, particularly in 1987 when the possibility of a merger with Muhlenberg
loomed large. We teamed up with alumnae, staged protests, and won that fight.
When the search for a new president began, there was a buzz on campus--we needed
a woman! We needed someone who would hold the CCC's mission as a women's college
as dear as we all did. When Dr. Blaney's appointment was announced, we hung "It's
a woman!" banners from the dorms and celebrated with glee. We still did not
know just how far she could take Cedar Crest or what an integral part of the
community she would become. I was fortunate to be able to attend her inauguration
in the fall of 1989. I have yet to be as awed as I was by the magnitude of
that ceremony. To see the presidents of so many prestigious institutions, not
to mention the then Under-Secretary General of the United Nations in my little
gymnasium, where I had practiced lacrosse and sang in Song Contest, was incredible.
I remember thinking that day that in one afternoon, Dr. Blaney had put Cedar
Crest "on the map" and elevated us to Ivy League-like prestige. More importantly,
I felt more certain than ever that Cedar Crest's future as an excellent women's
college was assured. Over the last 17 years, I've become more certain of that
as I have heard of other women's colleges becoming co-ed, while CCC's enrollment
has continued to expand. Thank God for Dr. Blaney! Last year I decided to finally
finish my master's degree in education. Where else could I go? I became a CCC
student once again and spent the past ten months driving an hour and a half
each way. I finished my last course a few weeks ago and applied for graduation.
I was so hoping to receive my degree from Dr. Blaney, who has been an inspiration,
a hero, and an honorary classmate (we presented her with her class ring at
our reunion in 1999) for all of these years. How bittersweet August 27 will
be. I'm sorry to have written so much, but know that I have only scratched
the surface of all that Dr. Blaney has done and been for us. Dr. Blaney, thank
you--for everything. We have all been blessed by your life.

I never got a chance to get to know President Blaney. It breaks my heart to
know that in this lifetime I never will. At some event, though I don't remember
which exactly, I met her and we spoke for a few minutes about different things....or
whatever subject happened to pop up. Though it was a small meeting I remember
walking away from her thinking, "Wow, she was an exceptionally nice person." Without
even truly knowing her, I could tell that she had a wonderful personality accompanied
by her sweet, warming smile. Her soul was bright and it would shine. I am sorry
for all of those who were close to her, it must be a great loss. My prayers

So many times when I think of Cedar Crest, my memories are tied to Dr. Blaney.
I will always recall the way that she made you feel personally valuable to
the College, to the Community. She welcomed students with a friendly and confident
manner. She inspired us with her words and with her life. Dr. Blaney made such
an impression on all of us, as a woman who could do anything! Her relationships
with people stretched far beyond her small world and into the international
and national leadership. Her legacy will be her love for her husband and daughter,
and her love for a group of women related only through college kinship. I believe
what Joseph Blaney said that we will never really know what a great woman we

I had the opportunity to talk casually with Dr. Blaney several times over
my five years at Cedar Crest. The last time we spoke was Spring of 2005. She
pointed out all of the flowering trees that she loved, and lamented that they
only lasted a little while. I told her that the trees and bushes were so beautiful,
with or without the flowers, and how I loved going to school in the middle
of a park. I see her spirit there, among the flowers and trees that she adored.

First of all, how could you not love that name?! Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney.
More seriously, I learned many valuable lessons from President Blaney. My first
impressions were that she had remarkable grace and poise that were woven beautifully
with her keen mind. I learned how valuable it is to "accentuate the positive" under
any circumstances. My favorite quote from Dean Manges was, "you don't go to
college only to learn what to do from 9 to 5". With her love of poetry and
her ventures into journalism, she embodied the liberal arts education we all
value. President Blaney arrived at Cedar Crest at a time when our grounds were
a bit withered and we were low on financial resources. Here I learned from
Dorothy that sometimes you spend money to make money. It seemed to me her first
order of business was to bring out the beauty of our campus which had been
suffering. Next she brought out the brilliance of a Cedar Crest education --
something students, faculty and staff already understood -- for the rest of
the world to see. She pushed the Alumnae Association to reach new goals; at
times this was difficult for us. Nevertheless we forged ahead with new vigor.
Her presence was a blessing to Cedar Crest.

While President Blaney was an inspiration and model to us all, I am grateful

delight to hear colleagues talk about subjects that are close to them in an
academic way. The second thing directly attributable to Dr. Balney's leadership
was the creation of the Faculty Development Fund. It was initially endowed
by an alumna, but eventually built into the college's budget. The fund financed
faculty research and trips to scholarly conferences. Over the years, it made
a great difference to the faculty, offering assistance for continuing development.
I expressed my gratitude to Dorothy about these wonderful things she did; I
want her family to know that the faculty are most grateful for her support
in these w ays. We thought she would be with us for many more years and are
sorry that she has left us prematurely.

As a member of the class that welcomed Dr. Blaney in as President, this news
brings sadness and disbelief. We were there celebrating her inauguration (only
yesterday, it seems) equally excited at the prospect of our new beginning together.
She will always be the heart of Cedar Crest in my eyes. She knew all of us,
and always made time for student life while still managing to develop our dear
college nationally and internationally. She brought us so much. Personally,
I will never forget her taking time for me on a particularly rough day - taking
time from her jogging to put an arm on my shoulder and spend a few moments
in the Moore Hall lounge to share her wisdom, strength, and compassion. I am
a stronger woman because of Dr. Blaney and truly feel blessed to have known
her. My prayers go out to her family and also my thanks - thanks to them for
sharing her with me, with Cedar Crest, with the world. There are two things
th at come to mind - the monologue performed by Darryl Hannah's character in "Steel
Magnolias" on what the passing of Julia Robert's character, Shelby's, passing
meant to her. It's too long to type here, but it rings true. The other is that
if I could sing a final song for Dr. Blaney, it would be, "For Good" from the
Broadway musical, WICKED - "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good".
Thank you, Dr. Blaney.

President Blaney welcomed many of us to this wonderful college through the
doors of the Admin. Building at Open Door Ceremonies. Now she has been welcomed

This past year was my first year at Cedar Crest. So I never got to truly witness
what some of the upper classmen got to see. However, the class of 09, I am
sure, is truly blessed to have President Blaney as our president for our first
year. I have heard so many stories about how much she loved each and every

THE TRULY GREAT
by Stephen Spender
I think continually of those
who were truly great.
Who, form the womb, remembered the soul's history
Through
corridors of light where the hours are suns,
Endless and singing. Whose lovely
ambition
Was that their lips, still touched with fire,
Should tell of the Spirit,
clothed from head to foot in song.
And who hoarded from the Spring branches
The desires falling across thier bodies like blossoms.
What is precious, is
never to forget
The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs
Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth.
Never to deny its pleasure
in the morning simple light
Nor its grave evening demand for love.
Never to
allow gradually the traffic to smother
With noise and fog, the flowering of
the Spirit.
Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields,
See how these
names are feted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
And
whispers of wind in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives
fought for life,
Who wore at their hearts the fire's centre.
Born of the sun,
they travelled a short while toward the sun
And left the vivid air signed with
their honour.

My deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dr. Blaney's husband and family.
What a loss for Cedar Crest and Mankind. I had the opportunity to meet with
her four times during her tenure at my beloved alma mater, and during her diagnosis

contributions of art and literature. What a woman God did make, and now she

Having graduated from Cedar Crest before Dr. Blaney's arrival, I unfortunately
did not know her personally. I regret that I did not because she sounded
like a wonderful woman. What I do know is that she was a tremendous asset
to Cedar Crest. I watched with horror as the college posed on the brink
of collapse in the 1980's. And I watched with gratitude as Dr. Blaney
turned things around. I was continually impressed with her contributions,
the important changes she made, her magnetic personality and enthusiasm and
her affection for Cedar Crest. She was so instrumental in the college's
rebirth that I cannot adequately express what her accomplishments have
meant to me personally as a Cedar Crest graduate.
As is everyone within Dr.
Blaney's wide circle of influence, friendship and love, I. too, am extremely
saddened by her untimely death. She was
so brave and hopeful during her illness that she remains an inspiration
to us all and she leaves a tremendous legacy to Cedar Crest College.
It will
not be easy for the next president to follow in Dr. Blaney's footsteps, and
I wish the trustees good luck with their search. I will continue
to watch the happenings at "the Crest" with hope that it will continue to prosper
and offer it's students challenging educational growth.
Sincerely,

During my first visit to Cedar Crest, one of my tasks at the Open House that
Sunday was to listen to a "Welcome" from President Blaney. I will never forget
her presence that day - and every day following. She knew me. Not just my name
and my major; the President of my college truly knew me. But I was not the
only lucky one. President Blaney regularly sung praises of the accomplishments
of Cedar Crest's women, and how they made our college the exceptional place
it is. I hope she knew how instrumental she was in helping us to accomplish
all that we have. So much of my motivation for success came from Dorothy Blaney's
shining example. Though I wrote my Commencement Speech for my classmates and
friends, part of me hoped that it would just make Dr. Blaney proud. I believe
so much of what we all achieved as students was fueled in part by that same
hope. I am so sad, but I am so honored to have known her.

When I was ready to graduate in May 1995 I was uncertain about leaving the
place I had called "home" for four years. Dr. Blaney and I talked for some
time about this. I felt no sooner had I figured out who I was (with the help
of Cedar Crest and the 'sisters' I found there) and I was about to move on.
Dorothy took my face in her hands, looked straight at me and said to me, "You
are extraordinary". That moment is forever burned into my memory and I want
to return the heartfelt compliment to her now. Dorothy you were and are extraordinary.
You will live on in the hearts of Cedar Crest students forever.

While I did not have the pleasure of having Dr. Blaney as my president, (lucky
my sister, Jeanmarie)I was so very fortunate to have her as an alum for the
many events and committees that she has included me in. Always ready with a
warm smile and hug, her charm and her wit was infectious. Her love and strong
commitment to our college was beyond amazing. I will never forget a meeting
I had attended when she emphatically stated that as long as there was a breath
in her body we would remain a woman's college. As long as there is breath in
us alums, may we carry on her torch, proudly with heads held high. She was
an advocate for the sciences, she was an advocate for the arts, she was an
advocate for woman. This loss will leave a hole in our hearts, but may we take
comfort in the fact that her legacy will live on. May we move forward with

As tomorrow’s memorial service for Dorothy approaches, I
think of you and the Cedar Crest College community. I did not know
Dorothy personally – I
had hoped to meet her at last year’s annual meeting of the Women’s

Be well.

Dorothy Blaney was the first person to greet me at Cedar Crest when I arrived

When President Blaney came on board at CCC, the college was in less than
stellar conditions. The buildings and grounds were in sad shape, several
dorms had closed all but one or two wings, and the student population had
decreased significantly. In those tough economic times, I was of the thought
that CCC would not survive much longer. President Blaney worked tirelessly
to improve the state of the campus; both physical and mental. She took it,
kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, and it is a place that we all
can be proud of. My condolences to her family.

I'll never forget how President Blaney encouraged us all to be strong women,
confident in our worth and always able to meet any challenge head on. President
Blaney stressed the importance of being a part of a community of courageous
and brilliant women who dedicate themselves to making a better and more beautiful
world. She modeled this for us through her constant devotion to Cedar Crest
College and to those students privileged enough to matriculate there. President
Blaney has given us many things-- buildings, gardens, endowments, and most
importantly, a role model of female strength and dedication. She will be
missed. However, her presence will remain on our campus and in the community,
as those of us inspired by her to achieve greatness will always (as we sing

Dr. Blaney graced our lives with INSPIRATION. Like many of my fellow students
at CCC, we remember her for her powerful speaking abilities. My life was
changed from the moment she gave a speech at an Open House in 2002. She spoke
about how a team of Cedar Crest women arrived in North Carolina to build
wheelchair ramps for individuals whose physical disabilities had trapped
them in their homes. Since they were not strong men, they had been looked
upon doubtingly. By the end of the week, they successfully built the ramps.
They not only improved the lives of a couple of people who felt imprisoned
by their homes, but radically changed the minds of those who thought a bunch
of women could not accomplish such a task. After hearing that speech, I knew
I wanted to be apart of Alternative Spring Break. For the past three years,
I have dedicated my Spring Break to traveling to North Carolina with a group
of Cedar Crest women to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. I've had the
honor of hearing Dr. Blaney speak at many more important occasions. I'll
never forget how special I felt my freshman year when several other students
and I had the privilege of sharing lunch with her at the President's house
after responding to an e-mail that invited the first several students that
responded. She was always genuinely interested in getting to know the students
better and proud of our accomplishments. When I heard of our beloved President's
passing, tears came to my eyes. I quickly realized they were not tears of
sadness. Instead, the welling of tears in my eyes were the only way my spirit
could express how overwhelmed and grateful I was for the gift that she has
given to so many. I know for many students, Cedar Crest is a second home
and a safe haven. More than that, it has transformed me form the quiet girl
in high school who didn't know what she wanted in her life to the strong
woman who wants to dedicate her life to helping others through scientific
research. Cedar Crest will always have a special place in my heart, as will
Dr. Blaney. As I return to campus for my senior year, I know her spirit will
be with us all, encouraging us to find happiness and success in our lives.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family and the rest of the Cedar Crest
community.

my abilities and the confidence she felt in the education Cedar Crest provided.
We were fortunate to have known her in the class of '89 and shared many special

Some of my favorite memories during my 4 years as a LLL student at CCC revolve
around "Dorothy". I don't mean any disrespect by using her first name in
that manner, but that is how we first met. "Just call me Dorothy." "I'd like
to hit a few tennis balls with you," was what had come before that informal
invitation. And for a few years to follow, I'd get a phone call at 6:30am
to see if I was up to hitting a "few tennis balls." Wow! She was a gooooood
player and it took all I could muster to keep pace with her. I enjoyed every
moment of it and will treasure those memories always. She was a very unique
person and the world is better for having had someone like her "hitting a
few tennis balls" with all of us while she could.

less homesick and over my 4 years at Cedar Crest began to figure out the

I write to add my voice to the many who have expressed their admiration
for Dr. Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney, and their sadness at her recent passing.
In January 2004, I had the honor of receiving an honorary degree from Cedar
Crest College, and the pleasure of addressing the winter convocation. Dr.
Blaney welcomed me warmly to the campus, and I left knowing that Cedar Crest
was a very special place because of her leadership. The Cedar Crest emphasis
on broad-based liberal arts education, critical thinking, and on leadership,
service, research, serve women well, and speak volumes about the person she
was. Her career in higher education as President of Cedar Crest, as the Executive
Vice President of Pace University in New York, and as Deputy Commissioner
for Higher Education in the New York State education system, helped to shape
standards for education which extend to the future, benefiting many. Dr.
Blaney's personal warmth and enthusiasm, and the excellence she demonstrated
in both scholarship and leadership set the standard for Cedar Crest and for
us all. She set a star in the sky for all who knew her to follow. She will
be much missed.

my own special way. The holiday party where she took me by the arm, said "May
I speak to you for a moment?", dragged me into the hallway, and said "Wouldn't
you rather walk in May?" comes to mind. I finished class in December 2000
but walked in May 2001. I've been listening to the song "Do I Make You Proud" by
Taylor Hicks (American Idol), and I always think of her when I hear it: Taylor
Hicks American Idol 2006 Do I Make You Proud I've never been the one to raise
my hand, That was not me and now that's who I am Because of you I am standing
tall, My heart is full of endless gratitude, You were the one, the one to
guide me through, Now I can see and I believe it's only just beginning Chorus-
This what we dream about but the only question with me now Is do I make you
proud Stronger than I've ever been NOW Never been afraid of standing out
But do I make you proud I guess I've learned, to question is to grow That
you still have faith, is all I need to know I've learned to love, myself
in spite of me And I've learned to walk, the road that I believe This what
we dream about but the only question with me now Is do I make you proud Stronger
than I've ever been NOW Never been afraid of standing out But do I make you
proud Everybody needs to rise up Everybody needs to be loved, to be loved
This what we dream about but the only question with me now Is do I make you
proud Stronger than I've ever been NOW Never been afraid of standing out
But do I make you proud This what we dream about but the only question with
me now Is do I make you proud Stronger than I've ever been NOW Never been
afraid of standing out But do I make you proud Do I make you proud? Do I
make you proud? REST IN PEACE, PRESIDENT BLANEY

It is with great sadness that I returned to Cedar Crest for your memorial
service. You had a great spirit that energized us all. I know that you will
look down on use and guide us through the next phases of our journeys. My
prayers are with all you touched, especially your family.

I just learned tonight of Dorothy's passing, though the memories, the smiles
in the pictures on your website, and her essay for Hope as one of 39 makes
the thought of losing her seem unreal. We have had sporadic contact after
our days working together at NYU and after we started our respective presidencies.
Her ideas, her enthusiasms, her zest for innovating and building have been
an example -- and a challenge -- for any of us who knew here, and we are
sorry to know of your loss.

Long time friend of Dorothy
Dorothy Blaney is very likely the most remarkable person I have known
in my 84 years of living. She is unparalleled as a communicator. I loved
her out of sheer respect for her personality and capabilities. I miss her
so.

I was completely shocked when I heard the news about Dr. Blaney. I mean
my jaw dropped, and I was speechless for a couple of minutes. She was a remarkable
woman who knew how to handle any situation with which she was faced. My mother
passed away from a brain tumor 2 months after I moved back east from Arizona,
and I can tell you that the pain of such a loss never goes away. It does
subside though, and with time, the good memories are what I think about every
day. Dr. Blaney lived a wonderful life; she was intelligent, kind, and she
had more perseverance than any person I had the fortune to meet. She and
her presence will be greatly missed here at Cedar Crest. My prayers go to
her family and friends that they too will persevere through this difficult
time in their lives.

When I first came to Cedar Crest College there was talk to joining Cedar
Crest to Muhlenberg. I don't remember that President's name and I never missed
him. Dr Blaney came in and turned the college around. She was a great person.

I met Dr. Blaney in our inaugural year at CCC. My early interaction with
her set a tone for my many of my experiences at Cedar Crest. She valued students
and their potential. I remember sitting in her house for a freshman tea of
some sort, and she asked us why we came to Cedar Crest. What struck me was
that she really wanted to know. I, and I'm sure many others, had the privilege
of being included in meeting with prospective students, and getting the word
out about programs at the school. I didn't realize it at the time, but she
was reinforcing qualities that I would one day come to rely upon in my professional
career. I transferred at the end of my sophomore year, but Dr. Blaney made
it a point to to say good bye, and wish me well on my adventures to come.
To her family and friends, you have my deepest sympathy.

I am so grateful to all the people who have written messages on this website
and messages to the family. Cedar Crest was so important to my mother. She
really loved her job, and not many people can say that. I miss her terribly
and reading about all the lives she touched really helps me.
