Choose Your Concentration
Cedar Crest students who major in English may concentrate their studies in either literature or writing, or combine an English major with a co-major in secondary education.
Literature. Read the best the English language has to offer. As a student focused on interpreting literature, you’ll build critical thinking skills and sensitivity to cultures other than your own. Students with a literature concentration are well prepared for graduate study in English and other fields, including law and medicine, or careers in business, media, and public relations.
Writing. Explore the joys of language and the limitless challenge and reward that a career in writing offers. As a student with a writing concentration, you will study and practice multiple genres--including nonfiction, fiction and poetry--before choosing one genre to focus on for advanced study. Students with a writing concentration are well prepared for graduate study in creative writing or careers in publishing, journalism, and more.
Secondary Education Co-Major. As an educator, you will be able to share your passion for literature with young minds. Cedar Crest offers an English co-major in conjunction with the education department, helping students prepare for a career in secondary education.
Whether you plan to spend your career penning best-selling novels or managing a Fortune 500 company, a minor in English will provide you with the critical reading and thinking skills you need to succeed in virtually any career.
