Dietetic Internship Certificate

Selecting the Cedar Crest dietetic internship certificate program as part of your preparation for the Registered Dietitian exam is a smart move. Established in 2010, Cedar Crest College’s highly competitive, fully accredited dietetic internship program provides a comprehensive background and essential experiences both in the classroom and in the community. Our program:

Note: Students in the onsite track will be scheduled for practice rotations at local health care, food service, and community facilities within the Lehigh Valley and surrounding localities. Students in the distance track program may complete their supervised practice in their home communities and all didactic course work via Cedar Crest Colleges distance learning platform.

Ten students who have earned their bachelor’s degree at Cedar Crest College and who meet rigorous early admissions criteria are assured placement within our internship program, though in every case only students with excellent credentials are accepted into the program. Placements may be either in the distance or on-site tracks. Some of these positions will be filled via an early admission process. Cedar Crest College applicants participating in the early admission process for the 2017-2018 internship class will be notified of their acceptance status and must confirm enrollment into the program by no later than December 9, 2016.

Admission Standards

Applying

The documents posted below are current for applicants to the 2016-2017 internship class.

It is highly recommended that you review all instructions carefully several months prior to applying to either internship track. The applicant checklist must be sent with the application fee to Cedar Crest College (only the DICAS application goes to DICAS).

Applicants to the Cedar Crest College Dietetic Internship are required to pay just one application fee to the College whether applying to one track only or to both tracks.

NOTE: All materials submitted as part of the application process will be considered the property of Cedar Crest College, and will not be returned.

Onsite Track:

Applicants who match to the Onsite Track will complete supervised practice in facilities located in the greater Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. They will be able to provide input regarding their site preferences after acceptance into the program and will be assigned a rotation schedule by the Program Director.

Distance Track: 

Applicants to the Distance Track may complete supervised practice in the geographical location of their choice. Distance Track applicants are responsible for securing their own rotation sites and preceptors for all supervised practice experiences by the February 15th application deadline. This process allows interns the opportunity to design a rotation schedule that aligns with their professional goals and to begin making contacts in the communities in which they intend to live and work after becoming Registered Dietitians.

Changes in federal regulations regarding delivery of online education have led to onerous application and fee requirements in certain states. As a result, Cedar Crest College cannot currently support supervised practice rotations in Massachusetts. If you would like further information or would like us to inform you if in the future Cedar Crest College is able to support supervised practice in your state, please contact the Internship Director.

We are pleased to be piloting a Part-Time option for our internship with Cedar Crest College applicants participating in the early admission process only in the 2016-2017 program year. If you’re interested in completing a Part-Time internship in 2017 or later, we may be opening this option to all applicants in upcoming years – please check this site in fall of 2016 for possible updates.

Mission

The Dietetic Internship at Cedar Crest College, in accordance with the mission of the College, is dedicated to the education of the next generation of leaders. Cedar Crest College prepares students for life in a global community by educating the whole student. The Cedar Crest College Dietetic Internship supports the education, development, and preparation of entry-level registered dietitians through a dedicated and knowledgeable faculty and community preceptors working within program goals and outcomes.

The Dietetic Internship goals for Cedar Crest College reflect program direction for the faculty, staff, and preceptors. The Dietetic Internship at Cedar Crest College will:

Goal #1: Prepare interns to be fully competent in foundation dietetics knowledge and skills  

Outcome Measures:

  • Over a five-year period, 80% of the Dietetic Internship graduates will successfully complete the registration examination on the first attempt and/or within one year of graduation.
  • Over a five-year period, 80% of the graduates who seek employment will be employed in dietetics-related positions within twelve months of completing the program.
  • Program graduates, during their first year of employment, will be ranked above average by at least 80% of their employers as they compare in terms of professional knowledge and skill to other entry-level dietitians.
  • Over a five-year period, 90% of employed graduates who respond to the alumni survey will rate themselves prepared for their first job by completing the Cedar Crest College Dietetic Internship.

Goal #2: Recruit a diverse cohort of motivated and qualified interns dedicated to completion of the internship process

Outcome Measures:

  • Ninety percent of the students admitted to the Dietetic Internship will complete the program within fifteen months of beginning the program.
  • To foster both ethnic and geographic diversity within the internship, the Cedar Crest College Dietetic Internship will recruit and fill at least 60% of its internship positions with qualified students who completed their didactic education and received a verification statement at colleges and universities other than CCC in geographic locations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Goal #3: Prepare students who can think critically in the theoretical, practical and evidence-based areas of nutrition and community programming

Outcome Measures:

  • Over a five-year period, 80% of graduates who respond to the alumni survey will rate themselves as “competent” or “highly competent” on the following competency: Demonstrate the ability to apply evidence-based guidelines and/or systematic reviews and scientific literature in the nutrition care process and model and other areas of dietetics practice.
  • Over a five-year period, 80% of graduates who respond to the alumni survey will rate themselves as “competent” or “highly competent” on the following competency: Demonstrate the ability to deliver respectful, science-based answers to consumer questions concerning emerging trends.
  • Program graduates, during their first year of employment, will be ranked above average by at least 80% of their employers as they compare in terms of critical thinking.

Goal #4: Instill a strong community spirit in each intern and DI graduate making community service a meaningful component of their professional experience

Outcome Measures:

  • 100% of interns will participate in one or more service activities through one or more of the following: not for profit organizations within the community at large, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a local Dietetic Association, a college Student Dietetic Association or through Cedar Crest College and its commitment to community service organizations.
  • Over a five-year period, 80% of internship graduates will indicate on an alumni survey that they participate in one or more community service activities.

Goal #5: Foster a learning environment that encourages continuing education within the profession’s guidelines and looks forward toward advanced degrees.

Outcome Measures:

  • During the first year after passing the Registration Exam, 100% of all successful examinees will identify their continuing education needs and reflect those in their five-year ACEND portfolio.
  • Over a five year period, 50% of graduates who respond to the alumni survey will answer yes to the following question: Are you in the process of or have you obtained any additional advanced degrees/ training/ certifications since graduation?

These goals reflect the mission of the Dietetic Internship which mirrors the mission of Cedar Crest College to educate the whole student, preparing them for success in professional and personal life. The CCC Dietetic Internship graduates should be prepared to provide community service to the citizens in their supervised practice communities and the larger global community by providing evidenced based nutrition services. Dietitians provide care to many different culturally diverse groups who often provide unique nutritional challenges. CCC DI graduates are ready to meet those nutritional challenges because of the variety and depth of experiences offered within the internship rotations.
