Why the Arts

A Liberal Arts Approach to Art

Jewelrey MakingJust as a liberal arts education gives you a well-rounded foundation upon which to build future studies, our “liberal arts” approach to the study of art will give you a solid foundation upon which to build your future career. By sampling a variety of media, you will gain new perspectives on artmaking. You also may discover an interest in a medium which you had not previously explored.

By participating in the art or art therapy program at Cedar Crest, you will learn to:

  • Think independently and creatively
  • Give and receive feedback
  • Work collaboratively
  • Communicate more clearly—visually, verbally and through the written word
  • Develop a solid foundation in the liberal arts, enabling you to adapt to an ever-changing workplace
  • Make educated and informed decisions about the topics and themes communicated by your art
  • Explore themes that affect women, society and the human condition
  • Investigate the historic significance of art and how culture and society shaped art…and vice versa
  • Understand the connections between the creation of artwork and emotional healing in a therapeutic context
  • Explore art as a communication tool—whether for shock value, as an agent of social change, or in a business capacity
  • Focus on the global impact of art as it reaches across boundaries and language barriers
