Social Studies Co-Major with Secondary Education

Would you like to share your knowledge and enthusiasm for history with middle school and high school students?

The history major with a co-major in secondary education will prepare you as a professional educator to meet the many challenges of the 21st century classroom, teaching social studies in grades 7-12.

You will be instructed and mentored by a highly qualified faculty: All full-time and adjunct faculty members in the education department at Cedar Crest are teacher scholars with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in K-12 classrooms. This degree program is certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Core Curriculum

 

Requirements for All Majors (15 credits)

  • HIS 107 European Civilization I 3 credits
  • HIS 108 European Civilization II 3 credits
  • HIS 121 Survey of US History I 3 credits
  • HIS 122 Survey of US History II 3 credits
  • HIS 350 Research Seminar (Capstone) 3 credits

Concentrations

All students must choose one of the following 21-credit concentrations:

  • American history
  • European and world history
  • Self-designed concentration

American History Concentration

 

Choose four from the following courses:

  • HIS 221 The Revolution and the Early Republic 3 credits
  • HIS 223 The Civil War and Reconstruction 3 credits
  • HIS 224 America as a World Power 3 credits
  • HIS 230 The American South since the Civil War 3 credits
  • HIS 231 American Cultural Traditions 3 credits
  • HIS 232 The African-American Liberation Struggle 3 credits

Plus the following two courses:

  • HIS 210 Liberal Democracy and Capitalism 3 credits
  • HIS 211 20th-Century Dictatorships 3 credits

Plus one other history course 3 credits

European and World History Concentration

 

Choose four from the following courses:
