CABRINI ENDS CEDAR CREST’S MEMORABLE SEASON IN SEMIFINAL MATCHUP

Radnor, PA (February 25, 2009)Top-seeded Cabrini College handed the Cedar Crest College basketball team a 70-52 loss in Colonial States Athletic Conference semifinal action on Wednesday evening in Nerney Field House.

Cedar Crest, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, was coming off of its first playoff win in school history on Monday evening over No. 3 seed Centenary College.

Freshman Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamitlon,OH/Stephen T. Badin), a First-Team All-CSAC selection and the CSAC Rookie of the Year, posted a game-high 19 points and grabbed nine boards in the loss for the Falcons. Junior Kelly Oakes (Wilmington, DE/Delcastle) added her 13th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) posted 15 points and six rebounds.

Cedar Crest and Cabrini battled over the first eight minutes of the contest with the score being tied three times and having three lead changes. The Cavaliers then went on a 14-4 run until the 2:21 mark to take a 30-19 lead just before the half. Cedar Crest would cut the halftime lead to seven on four made free throws by Sunderhaus and Oakes. Sunderhaus also hit a layup just before the half.

The Falcons went on an 8-0 run to open the second half and took a 32-30 lead at 17:24 on a three-pointer by sophomore Lauren Seale (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Christian). This marked the last time in the contest that Cedar Crest would hold the lead. Cabrini capitalized on Cedar Crest’s turnovers and missed shots to control the rest of the contest. The Cavaliers took their largest lead of the night with 2:09 to go, 70-52.

Kayleen Smith led the Cavaliers with 16 points, while Brittany McLeod added 10 points and 10 boards.

Cedar Crest ends its record-setting season at 14-12 overall, while Cabrini improves to 22-4 and will play in the CSAC Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Nerney Field House.
