CEDAR CREST BASKETBALL GIVES NEUMANN A SCARE, BUT FALLS IN FINAL MINUTES

Aston, PA (January 30, 2010) – The Cedar Crest College basketball team gave Neumann University a scare, but fell, 70-63, in the final minutes in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Mirenda Center.

Neumann, who remains undefeated in the CSAC, was led by senior Brittany Whetts who dropped a game-high 33 points to break the all-time Neumann women’s basketball scoring record of 1,608 points.  Whetts now has 1,633 career points as a Knight.

Cedar Crest was led by senior Lakeema Jones (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) who posted a team-high 20 points. Jones has scored in double figures in eight-straight games for the Falcons.

Senior Kelly Oakes (Wilmington, DE/Delcastle) added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards for the Falcons, while sophomore Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) added 10 points, nine boards, and two assists in 28 minutes of action.

Cedar Crest opened the first half on a 6-0 run, but Neumann would even the score at the 16:16 mark.  The next eight minutes of action saw five lead changes and the score tied a total of five times.  Neumann then extended its lead to nine, taking a 35-26 lead into halftime.

The second half of play saw Cedar Crest playing catch up for the majority of the half, until Neumann’s lead was cut to just two points on a Sunderhaus jumper with 7:45 remaining in the contest.  Neumann responded again as Whetts scored 11 points over the final six minutes of the game to hold on to the key CSAC victory.

Cedar Crest falls to 10-8 overall (4-5 CSAC), while Neumann improves to 15-4 overall (10-0 CSAC).  The Falcons will travel to Baptist Bible College on Monday evening for a 7:00 p.m. CSAC matchup in Clarks Summit, PA.
