SUNDERHAUS NOTCHES DOUBLE-DOUBLE AS CEDAR CREST HANDS LANCASTER BIBLE 65-39 LOSS IN FALCON CLASSIC TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT
Allentown, PA (November 20, 2009) – Sophomore Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) posted her first double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 boards to lead the Cedar Crest College basketball team to a 65-39 victory over Lancaster Bible College on the opening day of the Second Annual Falcon Classic Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening in Lees Gymnasium.
Junior Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) notched 13 points, going 6-for-10 from the field, and added eight rebounds, while sophomore Allison Horn (New Triploi, PA/Northwestern) added 11 points and a game-high seven assists for the Falcons in the victory.
Wallower went on a tear to open the contest, hitting for seven-straight points to give the Falcons the early 7-0 lead. Sunderhaus then buried a three-pointer to make it a 10-0 run. Horn then added a free throw to go ahead, 11-0. Lancaster Bible did not hit its first field goal until Deb Martin hit a jumper with 12:48 to go in the first half to make it an 11-2 contest.
Cedar Crest took a 21-8 lead at the 6:56 mark on a trey by junior Kelley Cipriani, (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) who posted nine points on the night. Cedar Crest took its largest lead of the first half when Sunderhaus hit a layup to put the Falcons up by 22 with 1:45 remaining in the half. The Falcons took a 35-15 halftime lead.
Cedar Crest would take its largest lead of the night, taking a 56-22 lead, on a three-pointer by Sunderhaus at the 8:23 mark in the second half. Senior Jesenia Holguin (Jackson, NJ/New Egypt) came off the bench and played outstanding defense, grabbing five rebounds in seven minutes of play. Freshman Lauren Salge (Robbinsville, NJ/Allentown) tallied four points in four minutes of action off the bench.
The Chargers were led by Cindy Blough who talled a team-high eight points, going 4-for-6 from the field.
Cedar Crest, which improves to 1-1 on the season, will move on to the Championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. to take on Eastern University. Eastern topped Arcadia University, 55-42, in the first contest of the tournament. Arcadia will play Lancaster Bible in the Consolation game at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
The Championship game tomorrow will be a repeat of last year’s Falcon Classic Tip-Off Championship game where Cedar Crest handed Eastern an 83-75 loss. Sunderhaus posted 16 points and 15 boards in the win.
