CEDAR CREST BASKETBALL WINS FALCON CLASSIC TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT WITH 69-57 WIN OVER EASTERN UNIVERSITY

Allentown, PA (November 21, 2009) – Sophomore Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) notched her second-straight double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Cedar Crest College basketball team to a 69-57 victory over Eastern University in the Championship Game of the Second Annual Falcon Classic Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Lees Gymnasium.

Junior Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) posted a game-high 19 points, while senior Kelly Oakes (Wilmington, DE/Delcastle) added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists in the win for Cedar Crest.  Sophomore Allison Horn (New Triploi, PA/Northwestern) also hit for double figures with 11 points.  Junior Lauren Seale (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Christian) added eight points on the day, including two key three-pointers.

Cedar Crest went on a 7-0 run over the first five minutes of the contest until the 14:59 mark when Eastern scored nine unanswered points to take a 9-7 lead at the 10:56 mark.  This would be Eastern’s last lead of the contest.

Cedar Crest took its largest lead of the first half when Wallower hit two free throws to put the Falcons ahead, 28-19, at the 4:31 mark. The Falcons took a 33-26 lead into halftime.

Eastern would get close once again when Lizzy Wilson posted a layup at the 17:49 mark to make it a 36-34 contest, but Wallower nailed a fast break layup and got fouled to make the three-point play and hand the momentum back to Cedar Crest.

The Falcons would take their largest lead of the night when Oakes hit a jumper at the 3:34 mark to put Cedar Crest ahead, 65-47.

The Eagles were led by Bekah Roland who talled a team-high 16 points and grabbed ten boards.

Sunderhaus was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while Wallower was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Eastern’s Lizzy Wilson, Lancaster Bible’s Nicole Karschner, and Arcadia’s Corrine Geiger were all also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Cedar Crest, which improves to 2-1 overall on the season, won the Falcon Tip-Off Classic for the second consecutive year.  Cedar Crest handed Eastern an 83-75 loss in 2008.
