CEDAR CREST BASKETBALL CONTINUES HOT STREAK IN WIN OVER WILKES UNIVERSITY
Wilkes-Barre, PA (November 30, 2009) – Sophomore Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) and senior Kelly Oakes (Wilmington, DE/Delcastle) combined to score 31 points and grab 38 rebounds as the Cedar Crest College basketball team topped Wilkes University, 64-53, on Monday evening in non-league action.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-1 overall. This marks the best start for a Cedar Crest basketball program in 16 seasons. Cedar Crest's only loss so far this season came at the hands of nationally ranked DeSales University.
Sunderhaus led all scorers with 16 points, while also grabbing a season-high 20 rebounds. Oakes notched 15 points,18 boards, and a game-high five assists in the win for the Falcons. Junior Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) hit for 15 points, while senior Lakeema Jones (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) added a 12 point effort for Cedar Crest.
Cedar Crest opened the contest on an 8-0 run over the first 2:30 of the contest, but Wilkes would answer by cutting Cedar Crest’s lead, 10-5, on a made trey by Samantha Lynams at the 16:45 mark. Cedar Crest continued to hold the lead over the next 11 minutes until Wilkes took control at the 5:29 mark late in the first half on made free throws by Whitney Connelley. Wilkes took a 32-30 lead into halftime, but the second half would be all Cedar Crest.
The Falcons went on a 9-2 run to open the second half of play and would never trail again in the contest. Cedar Crest went up by as much as 13 at the 1:48 mark on made free throws by Wallower.
Wilkes was led by Connelley, who tallied a team-high 13 points and grabbed six boards.
Cedar Crest, which sits at 4-1 overall on the season, will host Valley Forge Christian College on Thursday, December 3rd for a 7:00 p.m. contest in Lees Gymnasium.
