CEDAR CREST FIELD HOCKEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER IN OVERTIME TO MARYWOOD
Scranton, PA (October 21, 2009) – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker to Marywood University on Wednesday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference play.
Freshman Catherine Onjack (Bangor, PA/Bangor) sent freshman Ashley Jennings (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) a pass on a penalty corner just 3:50 into the contest to give Cedar Crest an early 1-0 lead.
Marywood’s Kristy Calafano then answered at the 12:39 mark to even the score, 1-1.
Sophomore Tammy Gruzdis (Allentown, PA/Liberty) then tipped in a pass from junior Jessica Macko (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) at the 24:24 mark in the first half to take a 2-1 lead, which Cedar Crest would carry into halftime.
Marywood tied the contest once again when Julie Dougherty sent a high ball into the cage at the 60-minute mark in the second half when Cedar Crest was playing a person down because of a yellow card.
Brittany Beaton then tallied the game-winner with seven minutes remaining in the overtime period.
Cedar Crest’s senior goalie Rachel Orlen (Robbinsville, NJ/Highstown) played outstanding in the cage for the Falcons once again, making 10 saves on the day, including stopping a penalty stroke in the overtime period. Orlen ranks 10th in the nation with a .831 save percentage.
Marywood held an 18-5 advantage in shots, while also holding a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners.
This marks the fifth loss in overtime for the Falcons this season and the seventh one-goal loss of the season. No other team in the country has played as many overtime games as Cedar Crest has this season.
Cedar Crest falls to 5-11 overall (2-5 CSAC) and will host Immaculata University on Saturday, October 24th for a 1:00 p.m. contest. This winner of this game will be the sixth seed in the CSAC Playoffs. Saturday will also be senior day for Cedar Crest. Seniors Dah-ve Bell, Brittany Fikes, and Rachel Orlen will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
