CEDAR CREST TENNIS FALLS TO NEUMANN IN TENNIS QUARTERFINALS
Springfield, PA (October 17, 2009) – The record-breaking Cedar Crest College tennis team fell, 5-2, to Neumann University at the Colonial States Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the Healthplex Sports Club.
The Falcons were looking to avenge a 5-4 regular season loss to Neumann back on September 26th.
Senior Sara Messner (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) and junior Amy Dichter (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford HS) were the lone winners for Cedar Crest in doubles action. Dichter and Messner topped Allison Trout and Kayla Chamberlain of Neumann, 8-3, in No. 3 doubles action.
Senior Maria Mallery (Vestal, NY/Seton Central Catholic) and junior Alex Kuebler (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) fell, 8-6, in No. 1 doubles play, while freshman Sarah Wicks (Bethel, PA/Hamburg) and senior Laura Shively (Allentown, NH/Pembroke Academy) dropped an 8-3 decision in No. 2 doubles.
Mallery fell in three sets to Ali DeTolla in No. 1 singles action, while Kuebler dropped two sets to Jasper Thompson.
Wicks was the only singles winner for Cedar Crest topping Trout, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles slot.
Messner fell in No. 4 sinlges play to Michelle Steward, while Shively and Messner’s matches both went unfinished because Neumann hit the five-win mark to end the contest.
The Falcons tied the school record with 12 wins this season. The 12 wins ties the 2007 team that broke a previous 11-year old school record. Cedar Crest has also broken the school record for most conference wins in a season after finishing 8-2 league-play. The previous record was held by the 2007 team for winning seven conference matches.
