CEDAR CREST WALLOPED BY DESALES IN BASKETBALL SEASON OPENER

Allentown, PA (November 15, 2010) - MAC Freedom heavyweight DeSales University made a visit to tiny Lees Hall tonight to kick off the 2010-11 women's basketball season. They did so with a resounding victory over the Falcons.

Cedar Crest, returning just five players from last year's team, struggled against the Bulldogs' seemingly endless bench. DeSales went 15 deep to Cedar Crest's seven and had four players in double figures.

The Falcons' solid core played well early on fresh legs. They stuck with the visitors through the first quarter of play, and were within two at 11-9 with just over 10 minutes to go in the first half. An attempted three by Lauren Seale would actually have given Cedar Crest their first lead, but the shot was off. Fatigue soon set in, and DeSales rattled off a 28-7 run to close the half and enter the locker room up 39-16.

Halftime adjustments did little to stem the tide as the Bulldogs held Cedar Crest to just 12 second-half points en route to an eventual 79-28 victory. DeSales' uptempo defense forced the Falcons into 47 turnovers in the game.

For the Falcons, junior Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) had 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and nine boards. Senior Kelley Cipriani (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had seven rebounds and senior Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) had five points. Cedar Crest attempted, and made, just one free throw on the night.

The Falcons open the season 0-1, and will now host Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Friday, November 19, at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, November 20, Penn State Wilkes-Barre will play a neutral-site game against Bay Path College at Cedar Crest, and on Sunday Cedar Crest will play Bay Path. Both weekend start times are 1:00 p.m.
