CEDAR CREST BASKETBALL DROPS PENN STATE WILKES-BARRE, 63-41, FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON
Allentown, PA (November 19, 2010) - The Cedar Crest basketball team scored its first win of the season tonight with a convincing win over a scrappy Penn State Wilkes-Barre team.
The game was a relatively balance affair early on. There were several ties and lead changes in the opening minutes as both teams scored freely from the perimeter as well as in the paint. Cedar Crest went up by eight points at one point in the first half on a nice steal and dish by Lauren Seale (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Christian) to Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) for the layup. But Penn State's Brittany Brown and Tiffany Denny Rochester came off the bench to up the intensity and inspire the Lions to go on a 16-5 run to take a three point lead on a three-pointer by Michele Vowler with 6:27 to play. After a time-out to make some offensive adjustments, the Falcons concentrated more on getting the ball inside to the hands of junior Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) and orchestrated a 14-0 run to close the half up by 11, 34-23.
The second half was all Cedar Crest as the Nits got no closer than 10 thanks to the hot shooting of Wallower who finished with 13, eight in the second half. Sunderhaus dominated the glass, finishing with 20 boards to go with 13 points for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Amber Wehry had a fantastic outing, leading all scorers with 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Seale was impressive with nine points and sophomore Megan DeMutis (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) had solid game at the point as she continues to mature into the starting role. Foul trouble started to become a factor late in the game, but the Falcons had enough of a lead to be able to slow the tempo and maintain their composure.
The Falcons are now 1-1, while Penn State drops to 0-4. On Saturday, November 20, Penn State will play a neutral-site game against Bay Path College at Cedar Crest, and on Sunday Cedar Crest will play Bay Path. Both weekend start times are 1:00 p.m.
