CEDAR CREST FALLS SHORT AT CONFERENCE OPPONENT MARYWOOD
Scranton, PA (January 13, 2011) - Despite another double double from Cedar Crest junior Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin), the Falcons lost on the road at their CSAC Northern Division rival Marywood by a score of 74-43.
Marywood jumped out to an 11-0 lead in a shaky five-minute start during which the Falcons seemed rattled by the Pacers' aggressive defensive pressure and scrappiness. After a time-out to settle everyone down and make a few adjustments, Cedar Crest was able to play with the hosts for the rest of the first half. The Falcons did a great job defensively, holding Marywood to just 29 first-half points, but struggled offensively, connecting on just 6 of 27 shots. The score at the half was 29-20, a nine-point deficit which seemed likely to be overcome if Cedar Crest could just get their shots to fall in the second half.
But any halftime adjustments did not translate into baskets, as Marywood opened the second half with a 15-0 run that put the Falcons back on their heels and effectively put the game out of reach. The Falcons shot a slightly-better 33% in the second half, but couldn't overcome the Pacers' 17 of 34 shooting. They also had 18 turnovers in the second half after just 9 in the first. The much-deeper Pacers subbed liberally against the fatigued Falcons and came away with the 31-point win.
Sunderhaus led all scorers with 27 points on 9 of 18 from the floor, 1 of 1 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 8 for 8 from the stripe. She also had 16 rebounds. Cedar Crest senior Leann Wallower (Havertown, PA/Haverford) had nine boards.
Marywood is now 10-4 and 4-1 in the CSAC. The Falcons are 4-7 and 0-5 in the conference and will travel south to Baltimore on Saturday, January 15th, in search of a CSAC win against Notre Dame. Game time is 2:00 p.m. and it will be carried live on www.pennatlantic.com.
