CEDAR CREST DROPS BOTH ENDS OF RESCHEDULED BAPTIST BIBLE GAME
Clarks Summit, PA (April 21, 2011) - Baptist Bible squeaked by the Falcons in Colonial States Athletic Conference softball action today by final scores of 3-2 and 5-1. Both times it was late-inning action that made the difference for the Defenders.
In game one, the Falcons looked to be in good shape after going up 2-0 after lead-off doubles by Shannon Wenner (Drums, Pa./MMI Preparatory) and pitcher Natalia Dial (Kannapolis, NC/Jesse C. Carson) in the second and fourth innings. Dial came through on both sides of the plate, going two outs into the fourth inning on the rubber before allowing the Defenders' first hit. Even after Baptist Bible drove in a run on a double by Law in the fourth, Cedar Crest still entered the bottom of the seventh leading 2-1 and with a good shot at the win. But two costly fielding errors and a wild pitch allowed the Defenders to plate two and steal the victory, 3-2. The Falcons managed seven hits to Baptist Bible's five, including doubles by Lauren Salge (Robbinsville, N.J./Allentown), Michelle Palmisano (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl), Wenner, and Dial, but could not overcome their own mistakes.
Similarly, in the second game the Falcons scored first in the third inning, while Dial prevented the Defenders from stringing anything together by allowing just three inconsequential hits over the first three-plus innings. Again Baptist Bible got hot late, driving in two runs in the fourth on a two-out double by Strayer to go up 2-1. At this point, Cedar Crest's bats grew cold, and the Falcons went almost three innings before they managed just one more hit in the top of the seventh. By that time, the Defenders had already gone up 5-1 after a strong three-run, two hit sixth. Cedar Crest had seven hits to BBC's six but could not find the right combination to translate them into runs.
It was a good outing for Dial who pitched both ends and had six strike outs on the day.
The Falcons are now 8-18 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while Baptist Bible improves to 17-9 and 10-6 in the CSAC. Cedar Crest's next game will be a CSAC doubleheader at Marywood on Monday, April 25th, at 3:00 p.m.
