One Win and They Would Have Been In: Falcons Split With Cabrini, Fall One Game Short of Playoffs
Allentown, PA (April 30, 2011) - It all came down to one game.
Cedar Crest's Laura Swanhall (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the opening game against Cabrini today as the Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning en route to a 5-1 victory. Cedar Crest's Natalia Dial (Kannapolis, NC/Jesse C. Carson) allowed just four hits and struck out five. Sweeping the doubleheader would result in a conference record tie with Cabrini, a tie which the Falcons would win by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker. At stake was the final CSAC playoff spot, and Cedar Crest was just one win away. But their bats went cold in the nightcap as Cabrini engineered a 5-1 win to give them the split that vaulted them into the playoffs and ended Cedar Crest's season.
In game two, Cabrini went up 2-0 while Cedar Crest was able to get a runner in scoring position on just two occasions in the first five innings, and neither led to a run. The Falcons strung together a few hits in the sixth but could not bring the runners across the plate. Dial allowed just five hits and struck out six, but costly fielding errors doomed the Falcons, particularly in the seventh when Cabrini plated three more to extend their lead to 5-0. Cedar Crest's final spark came in the bottom of the seventh with a Danielle Freeman (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) double that became the Falcons' only run. Tammy Gruzdis (Allentown, PA/Liberty) went 2-for-4 and had the lone RBI.
The Falcons finish the season 11-21 overall and drop to 10-12 in the conference.
