MACS TOO MIGHTY FOR RAIN-SOAKED FALCONS
Allentown, PA (April 16, 2011) - It would seem that the conditions at game time - 33 degree temperatures and a 20 mph wind that resulted in horizontal rain - wouldn't favor either team, but the Falcons came out on the short end of a lopsided game against CSAC opponent Immaculata. The final of the first (and hopefully not annual) "Slip-n-Slide Bowl" was 18-1.
The Macs' Kacie O'Neill scored a goal in the first two minutes of the game, the first of her game-high five goals. In all, nine Immaculata players scored, as the Macs went on to score a goal about every two minutes until they had built a 14-0 lead with 5:00 to go in the half. They outshot the Falcons 28-3 in the first half, and goalkeeper Kim Katsigianis (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) had eight saves. The sloppy conditions meant that most shots, on both sides, were wide by quite a bit.
It wasn't until almost 10:00 minutes into the second half that Cedar Crest had a goal, a nice shot by Tara Fikes off a Katie Brown pass. That brought the score to 17-1, and the Macs added one more in the final 20:00. Once again, better play in the second half by the Falcons resulted in fewer shots on goal by the visitor, fewer turnovers, and a few more ground balls, but it would not be enough to overcome the much deeper Immaculata team. Mo Manning (Dimock, PA/Elk Lake) had five ground balls for Cedar Crest, and Becca Lowe (Richmond, VA/James River) had four. Katsigianis finished with 14 saves.
The Falcons are now 2-11 and 1-5 in the CSAC, while the Macs improve to 5-8 and 3-3 in the conference. The Falcons' next game will be at CSAC foe Cabrini on Tuesday, April 19th, at 4:00 p.m.
