School Nurse Certification Program

An applicant to the school nurse certification program must be an RN licensed to practice with one year of professional experience and a baccalaureate degree in nursing. A GPA of 2.5 is required for admission and progression in the program.

Requirements for the School Nurse Certification Program

EDU 550 Educational Planning 3 credits
EDU 359/559 Teaching the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Student 3 credits
PSY 250 Life-Span Development 3 credits
SPE 243 The Exceptional Child 3 credits
SPE 320/520 Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities 3 credits
SNC 380 Methodology in School Health Services (Online) 3 credits
SNC 381 School Nurse Practicum (Online) 5 credits

All candidates for the school nurse certificate, both in state and out of state, must take SNC 380 and 381 in sequential order and within one academic year. Candidates for certification in Pennsylvania must have proof of successful completion of the following college level courses; 1 in Literature, 1 in Writing, and 2 in Math.

Clinical Requirements

All students must provide proof of RN liscensure from the state in which they will complete their practicum and to which the are applying for certification:

  • Completed health forms with lab work attached
  • CPR certification- Must be one of the following:
    • American RED Cross CPER/AED for the Professional Rescuer
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers
  • Proof of health insurance
  • An FBI criminal history clearance
  • A child abuse history clearance
  • A PA criminal history clearance

Prospective and current nursing students must submit criminal background checks that meet the requirements of the nursing program before beginning nursing courses and annually thereafter.

Prospective and current nursing students with criminal records must disclose their record and schedule a meeting with the Nursing Department Chairperson upon admission to or throughout progression at Cedar Crest College.
