CBS/New York Weathercaster Gives Baccalaureate Address

Katie FehlingerCommencement Day 2011 kicked off with the traditional baccalaureate ceremony in Lees Hall gymnasium. The baccalaureate is a ceremony where graduates, family, friends, and the Cedar Crest community come together to reflect and give pause in preparation for commencement and the next steps following graduation. The baccalaureate ceremony had special music, readings from students, and a guest alumnae speaker.

Cedar Crest College was proud to welcome Katie Fehlinger ’04 as the 2011 baccalaureate speaker. A popular weathercaster with national experience, Fehlinger joined the CBS 2/New York weather team in April as a weekend weathercaster. She also serves weekdays as a features reporter at the station.

Prior to her current position, Fehlinger worked as a daily host and producer at AccuWeather in State College, Pa., where she appeared daily on the Local Accuweather Television Network in nearly 70 markets, and also delivered 50-60 regional and local forecast videos to millions of Americans each day via the Internet, mobile devices and on-demand video, on digital signage and in print. Among her most noteworthy special projects at AccuWeather was hosting, producing and editing “Headline: Earth,” a series on climate change that was broadcast nationally.

During that time, she also served as a regular football, baseball, and hockey game day weather reporter for the YES Network, several regional Fox Sports Networks, NESN, and the Big Ten Network. She has appeared on a host of other major networks including FOX News, FOX Business, ESPN, and ABC.

Fehlinger began her broadcasting career in the Lehigh Valley. She interned at RCN4 cable television news while a student in the communication program at Cedar Crest, and then went on to work two years at WLVT Channel 39 for their Emmy-winning program, Tempo.

After doing reporting and long-form features for the local Public Broadcasting Station affiliate, she made the switch to weather in 2006. Her first-ever “live hit” was an update for FOX News on tornadoes ripping through the Midwest. The excitement of covering a powerful natural disaster as it unfolded cemented Fehlinger’s career aspirations as a weathercaster. She is currently working toward a B.S. in geosciences and certificate in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University.

Fehlinger graduated summa cum laude from Cedar Crest College with a bachelor’s in communications in 2004. Her mother, Melanie Fehlinger, was in the same graduating class. Katie Fehlinger is an avid fitness junkie and taught spin classes for five years. She is a fan of Penn State football, where her weather forecasts have been featured on the JumboTron, and women’s volleyball. She lives in New Jersey with her fiancé and their two lovable cats.
