"WOMEN'S HEALTH: AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME" CEDAR CREST COLLEGE PRESENTS ITS 4TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Event, Dedicated to Late President, Has Special Focus on Women's Issues
Allentown, PA (April 10, 2007) - The Health Connection at Cedar Crest College is proud to announce its 4th Annual Conference on Health and Wellness. With its theme, "Women's Health: An Idea Whose Time Has Come," the day-long event will explore the unique attributes of women's health with an emphasis on the need for further research. The conference, which is dedicated to the late Dr. Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney, former president of Cedar Crest College, will take place on Thursday, April 26, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in and around the Tompkins College Center.
"Dr. Blaney was a champion for the cause of women's health and was instrumental in starting The Health Connection and this conference at Cedar Crest," says Dr. Carol Pulham, acting president of the College. "It is fitting that it be dedicated to her memory and focus on women-specific health issues."
A new aspect of the conference this year is the involvement of eleven student-led clubs will host activities outdoors on the Quad including Alex's Lemonade Stand, make your own stress ball, and information about organ donation and healthy snacking. In addition, a schedule of Healing Arts will include massages, Hatha yoga and a Circuit and Sculpt fitness class.
The conference takes a holistic view of health and wellness by including activities and presentations that explore and promote the health of mind, body and spirit, as well as societal implications on wellness. With this interdisciplinary approach, attendees have the opportunity to learn about the science of health through student and faculty scientific research projects and workshops, posters, blood pressure and body fat screenings and information tables. But they are also able to witness dance performances, discover therapy through art and horticulture, and even take a class in healthy cooking with local ingredients.
About The Health Connection
The Health Connection at Cedar Crest College is a multi-pronged program dedicated to promoting the health of mind, body and spirit through education, experience and research. The goal of the program is to implement and evaluate interventions that are intended to transform our campus into a healthy community that will, in time, inspire other colleges and universities to reach for similar goals.
In 2006, The Health Connection was selected as the Gold Award winner in the category of Student Health, Wellness and Counseling by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). NASPA chose Cedar Crest's program from a national pool of program entries that included Silver Award winner New York University and Bronze Award winner Syracuse University. The award, given in recognition of the efforts that college campuses are making to encourage healthier lifestyle choices, was part of the annual NASPA Excellence Awards.
