PHILLIPSBURG, ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC AND EMMAUS ARE TOPS AT CEDAR CREST'S 25TH ANNUAL BIOLOGY OLYMPICS
Nine Area High Schools Take Part in Science Event Held on April 13, 2007
Allentown, PA (April 13, 2007) - High school students from twelve area high schools went for the gold, in the science lab, during Cedar Crest College's 25th Annual Biology Olympics. Each year, the Biology Olympics challenges students to demonstrate their knowledge of biology while encouraging interest in all areas of science as well.
The day-long competition featured group and individual events. Students competed in a Biology Bowl patterned after the popular College Bowl question and answer format. Participants also used their critical thinking skills in an experimental design competition, which required students to submit a written plan of action detailing a solution to a given biological problem. Other events included a trivia contest, a scavenger hunt and individual events in ecology, genetics, botany, zoology and human anatomy and physiology. The day ended with an "Olympic Awards Ceremony" honoring the top scoring schools.
The Biology Olympics is one of many events at Cedar crest designed to encourage high school students to excel in math and science. Competing schools included: Allentown Central Catholic, Catasauqua High School, Emmaus High School, Northern Lehigh High School, Philipsburg High School, Parkland High School, Pleasant Valley High School , Pocono Mountain High School, Southern Lehigh High School, William Allen High School, Wilson Area High School, and Whitehall High School.
