CEDAR CREST COLLEGE NAMED "BEST VALUE"

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Cedar Crest College #8
Among 'America's Best Colleges' for 2005

Achievement marks ninth "Top Ten" appearance since 1989

Allentown, PA (August 20, 2004) - For the sixteenth year in a row, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Cedar Crest College among the nation's top liberal arts colleges in its annual survey of "America's Best Colleges." The publication has also named Cedar Crest as the number six "Best Value" in regional rankings.

In its 2005 Guide to "America's Best Colleges," U.S. News ranked Cedar Crest College as the number eight school for Comprehensive Colleges - Bachelor's in the North. U.S. News also ranked Cedar Crest number eight in 2004. It is the ninth time since 1989 that the magazine has ranked Cedar Crest in the Top 10. The College has appeared among the Top Tier Liberal Arts Colleges in every edition of the annual rankings since 1989.

In addition to being named a Top 10 College, Cedar Crest is also listed as a "Best Value." According to U.S. News, "The formula used to determine which schools offer the best value relates a school's academic quality, as indicated by its U.S. News ranking, to the net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of financial aid. The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. Only schools ranked in the top half of their categories are included, on the premise that the most significant values are among colleges that are above average academically." Cedar Crest earned the highest ranking in this category over any of the other colleges and universities in the Lehigh Valley.

In the new edition of the magazine, which is due on newsstands on August 23, "U.S. News" ranks more than 1400 schools across the country - including 324 in the "comprehensive colleges - bachelors" category. According to U.S. News, these comprehensive colleges "are schools which focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs in the liberal arts, which account for fewer than half of their bachelor's degrees and in professional fields such as business, nursing and education."

The U.S. News ranking comes as Cedar Crest College welcomes one of the largest classes of new students in the College's history. A total of 280 new students - including 247 incoming freshman - arrive on campus Thursday, August 19. New students hail from 18 states in the U.S. Among the new class, more than 65 percent have indicated that they will study in the College's science programs. The forensic science program alone has generated interest from 20 percent of the new students. Forensic Science, nursing, education and biology majors continue to be large areas of interest for incoming students.

"Cedar Crest College has been consistently recognized by "U.S. News" for its value and the distinctiveness of its academic programming," says Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney, president of Cedar Crest College. "The tremendous growth of the College and the continued excellence of the Cedar Crest student body is certainly reflected in our Top 10 ranking, among other factors."

According to U.S. News, the magazine first categorizes each college and university by mission and, in some cases, by region. Then the magazine pours over data from each of the schools. Using the data provided, and other information pulled from additional resources, the schools are judged on up to 15 indicators of academic excellence. Finally, the colleges in each category are ranked against their peers. The complete list is expected to be available in the August 23 issue of U.S. News and in a separate book, America's Best Colleges. Both publications are expected to be on newsstands by August 23.
