"NON FUNCTION FOLLOWS
FORM/CEDAR CREST COLLEGE"
Single Frame Time Exposure Photographs
Allentown, PA (August 30, 2004) - Photographic artist Vicki DaSilva will display a series of site-specific photographs that she created using her signature process for a new exhibition entitled, "Non Function Follows Form/Cedar Crest College." The exhibit will be on display in the Tompkins Gallery and will open on September 28, 2004 with an artist talk from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
DaSilva creates her images using a unique process that combines elements of painting and sculpture through photography. Installations comprised of a custom made track system that enables a 4 foot fluorescent light bulb with colored gels to travel the 100 foot distance is repeated across the landscape. The track is set up to conform to the topographical landscape of each particular site. The artist captures the movement of the light on film through a series of single frame, time exposure photographs.
For this exhibition, DaSilva applied the process to two locations on the Cedar Crest College Campus. The sites are the hill behind Moore Hall dormitory and the Greek Theatre in the rear of Tompkins College Center. The photographs will be displayed as 40x60 inch prints.
"'Non Function Follows Form' is a continuation of my commitment to the exploration of this particular process, which is my signature style as an artist," says DaSilva. "I have been applying this process to various types of landscapes and documenting it through photographs for more than twenty years."
Vicki DaSilva received a 2003 and 2001 photography Fellowship from the PA Council on the Arts. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. She currently resides in Allentown, PA.
The exhibit will run from September 28, 2004 through November 7, 2004 and is free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. For more information, please contact the Art Department at 610-606-4666, ext. 3468.
