CEDAR CREST COLLEGE WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 23
Allentown, PA (August 22, 2007) - Cedar Crest College will welcome 275 new students - freshmen and transfers - to its campus as the fall semester kicks off with new student move-in and orientation exercises, Thursday, August 23. Students begin arriving on campus at 8:30 a.m. and are expected to continue until 1:00 p.m. New students will embark on their orientation to the College through Sunday. The College will officially observe the opening of the academic year in Convocation exercises on Sunday, August 26 at 4:00 p.m.
Coming from 22 different states, the Class of 2011 continues a period of enrollment growth at the College, which also included record-breaking enrollments in the last few years. The College continues to see strong interest in the sciences - with forensic science, nursing and genetic engineering as top-indicated programs - as well as dance, education and psychology.
The College continues to select an impressive group of young women who have demonstrated academic achievement and extraordinary individual accomplishments. "More than 25 percent of our incoming students were in the top 10 percent of their class and more than 60 percent were in the top 25 percent of their class," says Judy Neyhart, executive vice president for enrollment. "Students continue to be attracted to Cedar Crest because they are able to pursue all their passions by combining areas of academic interests - like dance and genetic engineering or psychology and art. At Cedar Crest, even these new students realize that even though they may want to pursue a career as a scientist, a nurse or an educator, they don't have to abandon their other academic pursuits. As a result the Cedar Crest student is very well-rounded academically and is able to contribute a lot to the campus community and beyond."
Other facts about the incoming class:
13 percent are non-white/minority students
48 percent of students are from outside Pennsylvania
83 percent of the class will live on-campus
The applicant pool applied to more than 600 different colleges
The campus community will kick off the new academic year with orientation programs for the new students including workshops and activities designed to help them make the connection to the College community. This year's program aims to offer the new students a starring role in "College Orientation: The Ultimate Reality Show" at Cedar Crest, and their first destination will be the residence halls as they move in. Other activities during orientation will offer new students a chance to learn about all aspects of college life from living with a roommate to the variety of clubs and activities available at the College.
As in the past, new students will take part in a day of community service to organizations in the greater Lehigh Valley. (Please see separate release "Cedar Crest's New Students Lend a Hand in the Lehigh Valley")
This is the perfect media opportunity to feature students as they move into residence halls and launch the academic year at college campuses around the Lehigh Valley. Media are invited to campus on Thursday, August 23th from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to interview and photograph incoming students, parents and members of the College community.
