Incoming Class Continues College’s Strong Enrollment Period

Allentown, PA (August 23, 2005) – Cedar Crest College will welcome 270 new students – freshman and transfers – to its campus as the fall semester kicks off with new student move-in and orientation exercises, Thursday, August 25. Students begin arriving on campus around 8:30 a.m. and are expected to continue until around 1:00 p.m. New students will embark on their orientation to the College through Sunday. The College will officially observe the opening of the academic year in Convocation exercises on Sunday, August 28 at 4:00 p.m.

Coming from 18 different states, the Class of 2009 continues a strong enrollment period at the College, which also included record-breaking enrollments in the last two years. The College continues to see strong interest in the sciences and nursing – with 71 percent of the new class indicating the sciences – with programs ranging from genetic engineering to nursing to forensics – as their field of choice.

The College continues to select an impressive group of young women who have demonstrated academic achievement and extraordinary individual accomplishments. “Nearly 30 percent of our incoming students were in the top 10 percent of their class and more than 50 percent were in the top 25 percent of their class. Our incoming students also represent an array of diverse interests including creative writing, the arts and athletics.” says Judy Neyhart, executive vice president of enrollment.

Other facts about the incoming class:

> 12% are non-white/minority students

> 11 different religions are represented within the class

> 80% of the class will live on-campus

The campus community will kick off the new academic year with orientation programs for the new students as they begin a week of workshops and activities designed to help them make the connection to the College community. Themed to encourage the new students to “Get in the Game” at Cedar Crest, the students’ first destination will be the residence halls as they move in. Other activities during orientation will offer new students a chance to learn about all aspects of college life living with a roommate to the variety of clubs and activities available to them at Cedar Crest.

As in the past, new students will take part in a day of community service to organizations in the greater Lehigh Valley. (Please see separate release “Cedar Crest’s New Students Lend a Hand in the Lehigh Valley”)

This is the perfect media opportunity to feature students as they move into residence halls and launch the academic year at college campuses around the Lehigh Valley. Media are invited to campus on Thursday, August 25th from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to interview and photograph incoming students, parents and members of the College community.
