Cedar Crest College soccer team gears up for first

season under Head Coach David Hodgson

Allentown, PA (August 26, 2009)—David Hodgson, an assistant coach at Drew University for the past four seasons, is gearing up for his first season as head coach of the soccer program at Cedar Crest College. The Cedar Crest Falcons kick off the regular season September 1 with a home game against Arcadia University.

The team was 1-16, 0-10 in the conference in 2008, but with six starters returning and a new coach with serious credentials, there’s reason for optimism this season.

“We’re thrilled to have a coach with David's recruiting experience and we’re confident that he will energize our soccer program. He made an instant connection with our student-athletes and they are excited about the upcoming season,” said Director of Athletics Kristin Maile.

Hodgson said the team has been picking up the intensity in practice daily, and he expects the team to be more competitive this season.

“We’re making great strides rather quickly. The players are getting more fit every day in practice, so the quality of play is getting better,” said Hodgson, who will be aided at Cedar Crest by Assistant Coach Tom Haney, a soccer coach with 30 years of experience who is heavily involved in the U.S. Olympic Development Program in Pennsylvania. “Last year we were beaten badly on several occasions. At this point we’re not so concerned with the win and loss column as much as being prepared to compete better game in and game out.”

In addition to his stint at NCAA Division III Drew University, Hodgson was also most recently an assistant coach and professional scout with the Sky Blue FC Women’s Professional Soccer League, where he assisted the head coach with all aspects of game day, training methods, and recruitment of domestic and international players.

Hodgson had a brief stint as an assistant coach at St. Peter’s College, an NCAA Division I institution, in the 2003-2004 season. A former member of the South Jersey Barons and Reading Rage teams, he has gained playing and coaching experience in Europe, North America, and Asia. His coaching credentials include an English Football Association Coaching Certificate and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.

Hodgson graduated from Worcester University (England) with a B.S. in sports and exercise studies in 2000. He was a three-year soccer team member, a student coach, and also a team captain.
