In announcing the new provost, President Carmen Twillie Ambar said, "Betty Powell is a staunch advocate for liberal arts education and dedicated to women's leadership. She is a perfect fit for Cedar Crest College and our reaffirmed core mission."

Powell is the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Queens University at Charlotte (N.C.), where she has served for six years. The College of Arts and Sciences at Queens is the largest academic unit with 75 percent of the university’s enrollment. Prior to Queens, she served as the assistant vice president for academic affairs at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. and as an associate professor of English at Mars Hill College in North Carolina.

Powell earned both her doctorate and master’s degree from the University of Kentucky and has a bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University. Powell, in accepting the position at Cedar Crest College, emphasized her commitment to women’s leadership, the relevance of women’s colleges in today’s society, the importance of global experience and civic engagement for undergraduates, and a robust adult education program.

She and her husband, a documentary photojournalist, will relocate to the Lehigh Valley this summer.
