AWARD-WINNING COMEDIAN PERFORMS IN CELEBRATION OF DIVERSITY
AT CEDAR CREST COLLEGE
Performance is Part of College's Black History Month Activities
Allentown, PA (January 25, 2005) - Cedar Crest College welcomes award-winning comedian Emmy Gay to campus on Wednesday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. for a special performance of her one-woman show "Nappy Hair a Celebration of Diversity." The performance will take place in the Alumnae Hall Theatre and is free and open to the public.
In her work, Emmy Gay pays tribute to diversity within our shared humanity, helping audiences see beyond stereotypes. She uses humor as a way of exploring the role of race and gender in our social history.
"Nappy Hair a Celebration of Diversity" is a solo, comic, spoken-word performance play in which Emmy describes her experience growing up during the Civil Rights movement. "It's not just my story, it's history," says Emmy.
"We're very excited to welcome Emmy to the Cedar Crest campus," says Karolina Matynia, coordinator of diversity and international programs at Cedar Crest. "Her humorous yet powerful performance promises to both entertain and raise awareness about the importance of diversity in our community. She was the perfect choice to help us celebrate Black History Month 2005."
Emmy Gay has performed her socially conscience comedy at hundreds of colleges, conferences and festivals over the past twenty years. She has been on Lifetime Television, Nickelodeon, Fox TV and USA Up All Night, and has been featured on the BBC's special On Alternative Comedy. Emmy Gay is a recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a 2001 and 2002 Brooklyn Council of the Arts Regrant, the 2002 Open Meadow Grant, a 1999 and 2003 Puffin Foundation Cultural Forum Grant and a 2002 commission from Dixon Place Theater.
