Day of Performances Brings Valley Colleges Together to Showcase Talent

Allentown, PA (March 22, 2007) - What do Shakespeare, the Titanic, and Mustard and Cheese have in common?  Audience members can get a dramatic taste of each on Saturday, April 14, 2007 as the Cedar Crest Stage Company hosts the Intercollegiate One Act Festival.  The festival will include performances by student actors from Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Lehigh University and Northampton Community College and will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Samuels Theatre, Tompkins College Center.

"Lehigh Valley colleges had participated in an event like this during the '90s and one of our theatre professors suggested we resurrect it," says Marion McCorry, assistant professor of performing arts at Cedar Crest College.  "It is a great opportunity for the students to stage short pieces and interact and learn from theatre students from other programs."

The Cedar Crest students will perform a selection from "When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet," a spoof featuring some of the Bard's most notorious and notable female characters.  Actors from Northampton Community College will stage an excerpt from "Titanic," the ill-fated luxury liner that, coincidentally, observes the 95th anniversary of its tragic sinking on the same day.  Rowen Myer, a member of Lehigh University's Mustard and Cheese Drama Society, will present a selection from "I Am My Own Wife," a one man show that received a Tony Award in 2004 for Best Play and Best Actor.  DeSales University students are also preparing pieces to contribute to the festival.

"We hope that this will be the start of an annual event that will grow to include more of the area's college performers and incorporate even more student direction," says McCorry.

The Intercollegiate One Act Festival is free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact the Cedar Crest College Box Office at 610-606-4608.
