LOCAL STUDENTS RECEIVE CEDAR CREST COLLEGE DEGREES
Allentown, PA (May 14, 2005) – Cedar Crest College awarded 188 bachelor’s degrees and nine master’s degrees at its 135th Commencement Ceremony held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2005 on the College Quadrangle.
Alice Anne Miller of Emmaus and Roland Sigal of Allentown, both Lehigh Valley leaders and Life Trustees of the College, addressed the graduating class and received honorary degrees for their substantial contributions to the College and community during the ceremony.
The ceremony was dedicated to local alumna, Elizabeth Mae Curtis – who died on May 8, 2005 at Phoebe home in Allentown. She died just two months shy of 101st birthday. The daughter of the ninth president of Cedar Crest College, Curtis had a life-long involvement with Cedar Crest.
At the ceremony, student speakers were Jaime Karpovich, of Kingston, PA, representing the traditional student population, and Linda Mohr, of Pennsburg, PA, representing the Lifelong Learning student population. Graduates received diplomas from College President Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney.
Alice Anne Miller, daughter of former Morning Call Publisher, Donald P. Miller, was awarded an honorary doctor of public service. As a Trustee — now Life Trustee — and officer of the Board she has provided a spirit of engagement and a strong vision for humanity and for women’s place in society. Miller first joined the Cedar Crest College Board of Trustees in 1983 and was elected Vice Chair in 1991. She chaired the Development committee and served on the Executive committee for more than a decade. As chair of the board’s development committee she led the way to a 95 percent increase in Trustee giving in just one year. Over the years, she also provided scholarship support to many students who wanted to receive a Cedar Crest College education. Miller received the 1994 Cedar Crest College Associates Award for outstanding service to Cedar Crest.
Roland Sigal, who received an honorary doctor of public service, joined the Cedar Crest College Board of Trustees in 1979 and has served as chair of the building and grounds committee; as well as a member of the audit, executive, finance and real estate committees. As a Trustee he has often advised the Board and the President on critical strategic issues. With his wife, Doris, he has been a great supporter of the College’s business program and in 1993 took on an even greater role — establishing The Roland & Doris Sigal Center for the Advancement of Business and Technology on campus. Sigal has served on the National Council of the American Jewish Committee; was the Finance Chairman for the Lehigh County Republican Committee and was the former chair of Lehigh Valley Association of Retarded Citizens (now known as Via of the Lehigh Valley), where he also served as president.
A list of local graduates follows. For more information, call the College Relations Office at 610-740-3790.
