Cedar Crest College Dance Company Presents "Messiah" Dance Concert To Celebrate Winter Season

Allentown, PA (November 11, 2003) - The Cedar Crest College Dance Company opens the holiday season with soul music, lively African beats and high-energy dance numbers as it presents "Messiah: A Soulful Celebration." The concert runs Saturday December 6 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday December 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Samuels Theatre in the Tompkins College Center.

Dancers will perform to a jazzy rendition of Handel's "Messiah." The Grammy-winning soundtrack produced by Quincy Jones features artists such as Stevie Wonder, Tevin Campbell, Take 6 and Patti Austin. "The music was at the core of it all," said Robin Gerchman, director of dance at Cedar Crest. "It served as our inspiration to create a lively, high tempo dance concert. The aim is to make the audience sense the music physically and feel as though they want to join in the dancing. This music was not necessarily made for dance, but the beats were very lively and full of rhythm. What makes this concert even more exciting is that it has never been done before," says Gerchman.

The concert will present the story of the Messiah in a representative but non-traditional way. "I believe this dance concert will appeal to a variety of people on many levels. Lovers of the traditional Messiah will find it intriguing, while a younger, less traditional audience might find it interesting, due to the nature of the music and dance. Either way it will appeal to the whole family," says Gerchman.

The dance company consists of 26 students who will perform in the concert, presenting tap, jazz, ballet and modern techniques. Instructors of dance Robin Gerchman, Pattie Bostick, Margo Clifford Ging and Nicole Hockenberry each had the task of choreographing an ensemble and manifesting the music into physical form.

"Messiah" is the second production that the Cedar Crest College Dance Company will perform this academic year. The dance company is also rehearsing for a concert in the spring. "I wanted the girls to have an opportunity to perform more, and to gain experience working under tight deadlines, with fast paced rehearsals," comments Gerchman.

The Dance Company consists of Elizabeth Bach' 06 (Shickshinny, PA), Andrea Edge '06 (Altoona, PA), Cassondra Eliasson '04 (Canterbury, CT), Jessica Fitch '07 (Hyde Park, NY), Dana Gatto '07 (Drexel Hill, PA), Victoria Gaumer '04 (Allentown, PA), Lauren Gonzales '04 (NYC, NY), Nicole Hess '06 (Shickshinny, PA), Lisa Knapp '04 (Richboro, PA), Noelle Krempasky '05 (Peckville, PA), Kristen Kuloy '05 (Bayshore, NY), Amanda Laigle '06 (Torrington, CT), Sara Mahoney '05 (Bensalem, PA), Maryjo Moninghoff '07 (Oxford, NJ), Aki Morimatsu '07 (Japan), Sarah Ricketts '07 (Gaithersburg, MD), Janine Pero '06 (Taylor, PA), Bethany Roberge '06 (Amherst, NH), Angela Romano '06 (Norristown, PA), Kate Schroeck '06 (Waterford, PA), Jamie Swartwood '05 (Great Bend, PA), Lynn Wilson '06 (East Palestine, OH).
