RAUB MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER WINS EDUCATION AWARD

Diane Colom, ESL Teacher at Raub Middle School, Receives the 2003
Howard Klopp Award for Exemplary Teaching

Allentown, PA (November 11, 2003) - Diane Colom, an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Raub Middle School, is this year's recipient of the Howard L. Klopp Exemplary Teacher Award. Mrs. Colom will receive the award at a surprise ceremony at Raub Middle School located at 102 South Cloud Street, Allentown at 3:15 p.m., tomorrow, November 12.

The Klopp award is presented annually by Cedar Crest College to local educators who best exemplify a devotion to quality in education; the ability to focus on each student's strengths; a commitment to helping a student achieve full potential; concern for the students that extends beyond the classroom; and outstanding service to school and community dedication to helping colleagues and advancing the profession. Mrs. Colom is the first Cedar Crest graduate to receive the Klopp Award. In addition, this is the second year in a row that a teacher from the Allentown School District was selected by the Teacher Education Committee to receive the award.

The administration, faculty and staff of Raub Middle School joined to nominate Mrs. Colom for this prestigious honor. "Diane has taken a very active and involved part in all aspects of Raub Middle School," said Regina Finlayson, Principal of Raub Middle School. "She gives many hours of her time to tutor students and to counsel them and also to meet with her students' parents. In a very short time, Diane has become a very intricate part of the Raub community."

Mrs. Colom is a member of Raub's Leadership Team, which works with the Administration Team to make decisions for the school and acts as a conduit for their Academic Teams and overall staff. She is also active in the PTA Association at Raub and is a leader in the Keystone Program - an after school program sponsored by Penn State Lehigh Valley that focuses on developing literacy, technology, career awareness and student mentoring opportunities, especially for students of low socioeconomic status.

"Mrs. Colom is the epitome of an involved and dedicated teacher, parent, advocate, friend and community leader," said Deana Young, reading teacher at Raub Middle School. "She constantly takes new classes and professional development programs to give her students the extra advantage of the latest teaching strategies to specifically help her students learn and achieve their goals in her classroom."

Dr. Klopp is a professor emeritus at Cedar Crest College where he taught for 25 years before retiring in 1986. Dr. Klopp passed away in November of 2002, shortly after last year's award presentation. This year will be the first time the award is given since his death. Each year, Cedar Crest presents the Klopp Award during National Education Week to honor Dr. Klopp and to focus attention on the outstanding teaching taking place in elementary, middle and secondary schools in Lehigh and Northampton counties.

Mrs. Colom's nomination letters and signed petition are available to the media. For more information, please contact the College Relations Office at Cedar Crest College at 610-740-3790.
