“Handel Meets Tchaikovsky” as Cedar Crest College Hosts Free Holiday Concert

Allentown, PA (November 30, 2009)—The Cedar Crest Performing Arts Department presents “Handel Meets Tchaikovsky and More,” a free holiday concert for the public on Sunday, December 6, at 2 p.m. in the Samuels Theater of Tompkins College Center.

The concert includes seasonal selections performed by the College’s Instrumental and Flute Ensembles, All College Women’s Chorus, Cedar Crest Singers, and soloists. Dot Hemerly, the musical director of the vocal groups and the Instrumental Ensemble, said the concert will include something for everyone. Elaine Martin will direct the Flute Ensemble.

The College’s Instrumental Ensemble will perform selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, including the popular “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” as well as familiar, sing-a-long carols. The All College Women’s Chorus will present selections from Handel’s Messiah, including "O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion,” as well as “Hallelujah, Amen” from his Judas Maccabeus, and the Hebrew folk song, “Hava Nagila.”

Among their selections, the Cedar Crest Singers—formerly the Madrigal Singers—will present “African Noel,” as well as “Joyful, Joyful” from the movie Sister Act 2. Cedar Crest College senior Michelle Schmidt will present a solo of “We Shall Behold Him.”

After a candle lighting ceremony, the All College Women’s Chorus and Cedar Crest Singers will join the audience in the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Messiah.
