Dr. Donald Stewart Exhibits Composite Renderings in Ballpoint

Allentown, PA (October 7, 2004) - Visual humorist Dr. Donald Stewart will display a selection of his innovative images in "Ambineural: Linear Expressions from Both Sides of the Brain," a new exhibition at Cedar Crest College. The exhibit will be on display in the Cressman Gallery, located in the Cressman Library, and will open on October 13, 2004 with an artist talk from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. A reception for the artist will follow his talk.

Dr. Stewart uses ballpoint pen to create composite drawings in which he renders a series of highly detailed images in order to create a larger subject. For example, in "Left Brain," the artist employs a number of what would be described as characteristically "left brain" objects - a calculator, a microscope, a protractor - to form what appears to the eye as a rendering of the human brain. The use of visual puns and hidden images are key characteristics of his work.

"I begin each drawing with a pencil sketch and a lot of research of the subject to come up with a list of possible ingredients," says Stewart. "All the images are drawn entirely by hand and the whole process takes about a month to complete."

Stewart's academic background may account for his attention to detail. He received his B.S. degree in biology and art at Birmingham-Southern College where art classes began as a respite from his premedical studies. Stewart continued to explore art as a hobby while pursuing his M.D and completing an internship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic. However, eventually Stewart's creative side won out over his medical training and he has since worked as a graphic artist, illustrator, writer and creative consultant through his company, DS Art.

The exhibit will run from October 13, 2004 through February 13, 2005 and is free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m Monday to Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 9:00 p.m. Hours may vary during the holidays.
