Cedar Crest College Education Department Donates Books to Local School
Allentown, PA (October 1, 2009)—The Cedar Crest College Education Department presented 125 books and $115 to Union Terrace Elementary School on September 25, to mark International Literacy Day and support the elementary school’s mission to educate lifelong readers. The donations were provided by members of the Cedar Crest College community.
Fifth graders Luis Oquendo and Dolymarie Mercado read some of the books presented to the school by Jill Purdy (left) and Meridith Gibbons on behalf of the Cedar Crest College Education Department and college community.
Jill Purdy, assistant professor of education and chair of Cedar Crest’s Master’s of Education program, and Assistant Professor of Education Meridith Gibbons made the presentation of books and money to Union Terrace Elementary Principal David Hahn and 5th grade teacher Jane Geist, who is studying for her M.Ed. in Art of Teaching at Cedar Crest College.
“International Literacy Day was earlier this month, and we decided each year to celebrate the day by collecting books and donations to give to a local school,” said Purdy, who noted this is the second year the education department has made such a donation. “We plan to provide support for a different Allentown School District School every year.”
Principal Hahn was very pleased to receive the donation from Cedar Crest.
“For them to donate books for the kids is incredible,” he said. “Our motto here is ‘read, read, read,’ and we want all of our kids to be lifelong learners and frequent readers. They love receiving anything special from someone besides their parents or the school, so this is like gold to them.”
