CEDAR CREST STAGE COMPANY PUTS ALL-FEMALE PERSPECTIVE ON ISSUE OF JUSTICE IN "12 ANGRY WOMEN"
Play is Based on Emmy Award-Winning Show by Reginald Rose
Allentown, PA (October 18, 2007) - The Cedar Crest Stage Company will present an all-female adaptation of the classic jury-room drama with its production of "12 Angry Women." The show runs from November 15 - 18, 2007 in the Samuels Theatre at Cedar Crest College.
In the play, a group of jurors enter deliberation for a murder case that seems stamped with a guilty verdict before they enter the room. A young boy is on trial for murdering his father and the evidence is stacked against him. As the discussion heats up in the un-airconditioned room, the twelve women's true personalities emerge and one lone juror introduces the possibility of reasonable doubt in the case.
"It gets volatile in that room," says Marion McCorry, associate professor of performing arts and director of the show. "Suddenly, a case where the evidence seemed rock solid starts to disintegrate and the diverse backgrounds and values of each character begin to have a profound influence on their arguments."
McCorry was drawn to the play because of the strength of the roles and the opportunity to adapt the original material, which was written in the 1950s, to a contemporary setting that will resonate with the audience. McCorry decided to set the play in pre 9/11 New York City in July and has given each character a distinct racial, cultural and socioeconomical background.
"The material still holds up today," says McCorry. "We, unfortunately, see cases like this, where young people are on trial for violent crimes, all the time. But the play doesn't focus on the supposed criminal, it focuses on the people - be they African-American, Muslim, poor or rich - who are pulled from their everyday lives and asked to balance their own personal issues with the bigger issue of justice."
"It is really exciting to see women in these roles. The play puts them in a situation that we rarely see women in on stage. There is no romance. These ordinary women, just like any one of us that could be called for jury duty, are on that stage fighting and arguing about justice and making a true life and death decision."
The cast of "12 Angry Women" includes Melissa Thomas, Jennifer Bonetti, Amanda Cloud, Imani Bowers, Liona Williams, Maira Cruz, Kari Cave, Christa Hagen, Elizabeth Statham, Hauna Colista, Ashley Thompson, Chealsea Anagnoson, Brandy Hill, Victoria Richards, Jaleisa Jordan, and Veronica O'Neill.
"12 Angry Women" is written by Reginald Rose and adapted by Sherman Sergel. The production is directed by Marion McCorry. The show runs November 15, 16 and 17 at 8:00 p.m. and November 18 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
