THEATRE PROVIDING A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
Cedar Crest Stage Company’s Presentation of “Unveiled Truths” - Stories of Women & War Provides Powerful International Portrait of Women Confronting the Realities of War
“Unveiled Truths” Runs November 20 – 23, 2008
Allentown, PA (October 24, 2008) - The Cedar Crest Stage Company will present the Lehigh Valley premiere of “Unveiled Truths,” Eve Ensler's play “Necessary Targets” combined with powerful poetic depictions of women on war, November 20-23, 2008 in the Samuels Theatre in the Tompkins College Center at Cedar Crest College.
“Unveiled Truths” is an evening of theater that combines Eve Ensler’s play, “Necessary Targets,” with illuminating poetry, monologues and diary entries on war, from female voices of ancient Sumeria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. “Necessary Targets” follows the story of two American women, a Park Avenue psychiatrist and a human rights worker, who go to Bosnia to help women refugees confront their memories of war. Ensler based the writing of “Necessary Targets” on interviews she conducted with real victims of the war in Bosnia.
“The idea of creating ‘Unveiled Truths’ as an evening of theater celebrating a global perspective of women on war evolved as all of us involved in presenting ‘Necessary Targets’ realized that telling only one story of post-war survival from the Bosnian perspective was simply not enough,” says Kashi Johnson, guest director and associate professor of theatre at Lehigh University.
“I was drawn to the many challenges of life after a war and how people, particularly women, are left to deal with these challenges, since they are the ones who nurture, rebuild and restore war-torn regions.” Johnson goes on to point out, “some of the women refugees are so badly wounded that they distrust their own versions of reality, while others are wary of outsiders, those who have come merely to talk about the war but have not suffered from it.”
The ensemble cast of "Unveiled Truths" includes Michelle Shortell, Chelsea Anagnoson, Antionette Byers-Paredes, Julianna Armstrong, Hauna Colista, Laura Goldman, Katie Walsh, Veronica O’Neil and Beth Statham.
“Unveiled Truth” is directed by Kashi Johnson. Set and lighting design is by Roxanne Amico. Costumes are by Rebecca Callan. The production is stage managed by Roxanne Holowienka .
"Unveiled Truths" runs November 20, 21 and 22 at 8:00 p.m. and October 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the Samuels Theatre, Tompkins College Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and $5 for students. For more information and tickets please call the Box Office at 610-606-4608.
