CEDAR CREST STUDENTS GIVE LOCAL KIDS A CHANCE TO OWN THEIR "FIRST BOOK"
Kickoff Event Includes Free Books, Games & Activities n Celebration of Reading
Allentown, PA (October 3, 2005) – According to a recent study, sixty-one percent of low-income families have no books in their homes for their children - a fact that significantly impacts their educational growth and development, as well as their sense of creativity and imagination.
On Tuesday, October 4, 2005 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., a group of Cedar Crest College students will deliver new books into the hands of about fifty Allentown students as they hold their first ever First Book Kickoff Event. The event will take place, weather permitting, outside on the Quad at Cedar Crest College and will include Reading Olympics, activities and brand new books for the children.
The event was organized by Cedar Crest College's First Book Campus Advisory Board, a group of thirteen students who are working to promote literacy by providing low-income students in the Allentown community with the opportunity to own their first books.
First Book is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to provide books to disadvantaged children. The organization depends upon local volunteer involvement, like the First Book Campus Advisory Boards, to select community tutoring, mentoring and literacy programs serving at-risk children and work to support these programs through books, grants and special events. By distributing books through local literacy programs, First Book ensures that the books are delivered in a context of learning and support.
