GALLERY EXHIBIT: PRINTMAKER RHEA NOWAK PRESENTS "ORIENTEERING" AT CEDAR CREST COLLEGE

Allentown, PA (September 26, 2006) – New England area printmaker and artist Rhea Nowak will display a selection of her work in a new exhibit, "Orienteering," at Cedar Crest College.  The exhibition will run from October 16 – November 12, 2006 in the Tompkins Gallery located in the Tompkins College Center.  There will be an opening reception and artist talk on October 16th at 3:00 p.m.

Nowak utilizes various techniques including painting, drawing, printmaking and woodcutting in her art to bring to life more abstract thoughts and ideas.  "My work involves ideas of continuity, chance and change," says Nowak.  "Some of the sources I draw from are current scientific theories, Buddhist philosophy and musical composition.  The tactile qualities of the materials and processes I use also effect how I use them."

The artist describes her works as books, with each type using a different medium and therefore facilitating a distinct outcome.  Nowak says that her mixed media books begin as two or three large drawings that are developed concurrently and then reassembled as a single book that tells a story.  Her print books utilize the capacity of the print process to capture a moment in the process.  In contrast, the woodcut books, which are made from one block, are records of the block's progressive cutting.

Nowak received her BA from Bennington College in Printmaking and Painting, her MFA from the University of Connecticut in Printmaking and Drawing, and a Master Printer Certificate from Il Bisonte, an international school of printmaking in Florence Italy. Her prints, drawings and unique books have been exhibited in juried and invitational shows in both the U.S. and Europe. She is an adjunct professor at a number of different schools including Connecticut College, the University of Connecticut, and the graduate program at Wesleyan University.

The Tompkins Gallery is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.  For more information, please contact Brian Wiggins, gallery coordinator, at 610-606-4666, ext. 3469.
