Cedar Crest Students Get Firsthand Look at Television Production in NYC

Students in the communication department at Cedar Crest College were able to attend a taping of the show ‘Whatever’ With Alexis and Jennifer on October 13. They were able to get a “behind-the-scenes” look at televised broadcasting and apply it to their lessons in journalism. On the show, special guests such as Vanilla Ice, the “Great Throwdini” (a knife-thrower), Brooke Peterson from The Private Chefs of Beverly Hills, and the host of What Not to Wear, Clinton Kelly, appeared and were interviewed in front of a live audience.
The Hallmark Channel program is a comedy-based talk show, hosted by Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis Stewart, and her friend, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt. They spoke on topics such as relationship advice, gossip and current events. Cedar Crest students were asked to pay special attention to the format of the show, the reality between what happened in the studio and what was broadcast, and the way the interviews were approached. Afterward, students applied what they learned to their studies of journalism in the classroom by writing a short review of the show, and their reflections about the experience.
“It was a lot of fun!” said Rena Wallace, a senior communication and psychology major. “I never got to go on a trip like that for a class before.”
