What's Happening at Cedar Crest College

Big Sis Lil Sis ‘Dink Donut Night’ this Thursday

The Big Sis Lil Sis “Dink Donut Night,” one of Cedar Crest’s greatest traditions, is being hosted this Thursday, Nov. 11, at 9:30 p.m. in the Tompkins College Center dining hall.

Dink Donut

Through the Big Sis Lil Sis program on campus, a Big Sis is an upperclassman that mentors and helps a freshman through her first year on campus. Dinks are highly decorated and often silly hats that are made by the Big Sis for her Lil Sis. The Big Sis gets to know her Lil Sis during the first few weeks of classes, and creates a personalized dink for her that will be a keepsake of her college experience. The hats were originally worn by students from the 1930s through 1980 during the first few weeks of school. In 1981, it was decided that dinks would only be worn for one day, as a sort of “initiation” into the college.

After the dinks are introduced to the freshmen on “Dink Donut Night,” they will be asked to participate in a special event together, and then meet with their Big Sis afterward for donuts.

“Being a Big Sis was something that I always wanted to do, and this year I finally got the opportunity to do it,” said senior psychology/art major Stacey Stangl. “To me, this event means passing on one of Cedar Crest’s biggest traditions from my generation to the next, and helping my Lil feel like a part of the Cedar Crest community. I’m really excited for ‘Dink Donut Night’ and can’t wait to see all of the Lils in the dinks that their Bigs have made for them!”

Students who are not a Big Sis or Lil Sis are still encouraged to attend the event, as it is a special experience for everyone. For information send e-mail to Hewalter@cedarcrest.edu.
