Power of Women Organization Joins Cedar Crest
Cedar Crest College and Power of Women—a Lehigh Valley-based women’s empowerment organization “dedicated to providing opportunities for women to reach their goals and their potential”—have joined forces to bring the best in educational programming, lectures, and networking opportunities to women in the Lehigh Valley and beyond.
Power of Women is now part of Cedar Crest College, where it will become a focal point of the Women’s Leadership Institute tentatively slated to launch in fall 2012. This institute will focus specifically on the College’s mission to educate the next generation of women leaders for success in a global society.
“Over the course of its history, Power of Women has identified many of the same strategic objectives as Cedar Crest College, and so bringing the organization into the fold makes sense on many levels,” said College Provost Betty Powell. “This greatly enhances the value we can bring to women in the Lehigh Valley as they look for ways to advance their careers in today’s ultra competitive work environment.”
Pamela Varkony, Power of Women founder and advisory board member, agreed that the partnership will take both entities to greater heights.
“Cedar Crest is a perfect partner because it is a local, valued women’s institution with a reputation for excellence and for educating future women leaders,” she said, noting that future opportunities for the collaboration continue to be addressed. “To be able to have the resources and faculty of an institution like Cedar Crest behind us allows us to move to the forefront of women’s empowerment in the region.”
In addition to being able to provide instructors for Power of Women’s personal and professional development programs, Cedar Crest College offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs—as well as professional certificates—to help women at every stage of their professional career. The College is currently developing a Women’s Strategic Leadership Certificate to prepare mid-level female managers with the knowledge and skills to be more effective leaders and managers.
About Power of Women:
A group of women led by local businesswoman Pamela Varkony began Power of Women in 1999 as a way to bring women together to share common experiences and provide ongoing support for their goals and dreams. Today, the organization empowers women from all over the world through support of entrepreneurs from Afghanistan and other developing nations.
The first “Power Luncheon,” held in Allentown in Oct. 1999, had 67 women in attendance. By 2008, the Power of Women Annual Luncheon and Networking Event hosted nearly 400 attendees and featured 50 women-owned and women-managed businesses and non-profit organizations. The 2011 event titled, “Doing Well By Doing Good,” was held recently at Cedar Crest. The organization has more than 1,200 members and there are no membership dues.
