Nowik Earns Award for First Year Experience Efforts

Christine NowikChristine Nowik, assistant dean of student success and retention at Cedar Crest, has earned a 2012 Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award from The National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina and Cengage Learning.

The Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award, now in its 23rd year, honors college faculty, administrators, staff and students for their outstanding work on behalf of first-year students and for the impact their efforts have on the students and culture of their institutions. Nowik was one of 10 award recipients selected nationally from 140 nominations.

She earned the recognition for her work as co-chair of Cedar Crest’s new and highly successful First Year Experience (FYE) program, which helps students make the challenging transition from high school to college. As co-chair, she worked with a committee to structure the program, develop goals/objectives/outcomes, and provide professional development for instructors of First Year Seminar courses designed to introduce students to academic life and the liberal arts.

“It is certainly an honor to be recognized in a field where so many people are doing so many incredible things with the FYE. It’s also notable that we have been recognized in our first year of running the FYE, which speaks to the institution’s commitment to first-year students,” said Nowik, a 12-year Cedar Crest employee who lives in Allentown, Pa. “We had the flexibility to design a program that focuses on the needs of first-year students from a holistic standpoint, an important element in supporting their learning and persistence.”

Nowik will receive the award at the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience this weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
