Campus Multicultural Center Promotes Diversity
The Multicultural Center Staff
One of Cedar Crest’s 22 strategic initiatives, the Center for Multicultural Life & Leadership has created a space where students of all cultural backgrounds can congregate, develop programming, act as a resource to the campus, and have immediate access to academic support. The multicultural center is largely staffed—and much of its programming is developed and scheduled—by Cedar Crest College students like freshman Demi Barzana.
“I think that one of the things that the multicultural center accomplishes is to help students from all cultures develop strong bonds and relationships. We all embrace each other’s differences and going to multicultural center events makes us more understanding of the many cultures around us,” said Barzana. “The event that I really enjoy attending is Talking Circles (campus community discussions often centered on multicultural issues). I get to meet and learn so much about the background and culture of a new guest speaker every week.”
The multicultural center has hosted a multitude of events on campus this year in addition to Talking Circles, including the Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, several Black History Month lectures, and a weekly Tea Time to bring together the campus community.
