Cedar Crest Tops in Student Nurse Challenge
Cedar Crest College’s team of senior nursing majors defeated Temple University in the finals at the fourth annual Southeast Pennsylvania Regional Student Nurse Challenge held recently at Gwynedd-Mercy College. The Cedar Crest contingent included Nichole Bloch, Emily Mueller, Cara Eckhart, Carolyn Zimpfer, and Kristen Flores. The team won a $500 cash prize for the Student Nurses Association (SNA). The traveling “Challenge Trophy” that was won will be displayed in the Hamilton Boulevard Building throughout the next year.
The Student Nurse Challenge is a quiz-based competition much like the popular College Bowl program. The Cedar Crest team competed in three rounds of elimination questioning, with questions being drawn from sources similar to what they will need to learn to pass the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. This competition helps all of the student nurse teams to prepare for this important test to become a Registered Nurse.
This year, 16 teams were invited and 8 competed. The Cedar Crest team went through the competition undefeated. This was the first year that Cedar Crest won, after having made it to the finals in a previous attempt.
“It was an honor to be a part of this academic event and to serve as a team member amongst some of the smartest women I know,” said Bloch. “We had amazing support from our professors, Dr. (Wendy) Robb and (Amy) Edgar. They have continued to support us and motivate us to challenge ourselves each and every opportunity that we get.”
