New Provost Begins Term at Cedar Crest College

Betty Powell, Ph.D

Betty Powell, Ph.D., will join Cedar Crest College as its new provost on July 1. After a national search, Dr. Powell was selected as the College’s chief academic officer, where she will play a central role in the recruitment, promotion and professional development of faculty and will spearhead curriculum assessment. The provost provides intellectual leadership and support for all academic departments and multi-disciplinary programs.

In announcing the new provost, President Carmen Twillie Ambar said, “Betty Powell is a staunch advocate for liberal arts education and dedicated to women’s leadership. She is a perfect fit for Cedar Crest College and our reaffirmed core mission.”

Powell has most recently served for six years as the dean of the college of arts and sciences at Queens University at Charlotte (N.C.). The college of arts and sciences at Queens is the largest academic unit with 75 percent of the university’s enrollment. Prior to Queens, she served as the assistant vice president for academic affairs at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C., and as an associate professor of English at Mars Hill College in North Carolina.

Powell earned both her doctorate and master’s degree from the University of Kentucky and has a bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University. In accepting the position at Cedar Crest College, she emphasized her commitment to women’s leadership, the relevance of women’s colleges in today’s society, the importance of global experience and civic engagement for undergraduates, and a robust adult education program.

She and her husband, a documentary photojournalist, have relocated to the Lehigh Valley.
