Cedar Crest Nutrition Department Offers New Dietetic Internship Program

Cedar Crest College will offer a new post-baccalaureate dietetic internship program, beginning in August.

The 10-month internship program will combine didactic course work with 1,200 hours of supervised practice at partner institutions and organizations. Participants will complete experiences in clinical nutrition, food service and management, and community nutrition settings. Successful completion of a dietetic internship is a requirement to become a registered dietitian.

According to Shelley DePinto, MS, RD, newly appointed dietetic internship director in the department of nutrition at Cedar Crest College, the addition of the dietetic internship program serves a nationwide need for such programs. She noted: “The College’s program is exceptionally well balanced, providing experience throughout the life span.”

Martine Scannavino, DHSc, chair of the department of nutrition, added: “We are very excited about our dietetic internship. We are delighted to play on ongoing and integral role in the education of future dietetic professionals in our community and across the United States. This program will enhance the Allen Center for Nutrition and Cedar Crest College’s ongoing commitment to health, wellness and education in the community.

Cedar Crest College is currently accepting applications for the initial class, which will include 10 students who will study primarily in the Lehigh Valley. In year two the program will be expanding to include 15 distance interns for a total of 25 students. The internship pledges 40 percent of available slots to Cedar Crest College graduates who successfully complete the 4-year didactic program in dietetics and meet application requirements.

To be eligible for the dietetic internship program applicants must have an undergraduate degree in food and nutrition science or dietetics with the accreditation standards as defined by the Commission on Accreditation of Education (CADE) for Didactic Programs in Dietetics (DPD), and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
